They're marking potential Cald roosting trees. Cald are a favorite prey of the black painter, so keep your eyes peeled and watch your back...they like to attack from the rear.
There are 3 certainties in an uncertain world:

If any of 'em only have 420 on 'em it the future location of a sho nuff cash crop.
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

If it is in a plantation it could be like “15x47” meaning #15 of this variety crossed with #47 of this variety. One number could be the plot number too if it is a continuous monitoring station. That was my thoughts too.

Somebody had a strange way of practicing for math tests.
Probably the Chinese. If so, be careful, there’s probably virus in that area.

Test plots for timber company. Years ago timber companies planted trees an marked every tree in a plot. Sometimes lot different plots with different types of trees an fertilizer . The numbers are probably date of planting, type of tree an what kind of chemicals was used or site prep. They would survey them every so often to check growth of trees in different area an soil types. Most companies don t do it any more because they sold land to a different company but the test plots are still there if they haven t been logged yet. From size of tree them probably 25/30 yrs old. I ve seen loblolly pine, short leaf, aspen, many different oak an poplar in plots on land that international paper owned (formally champion).
