I am seriously considering selling most all of my hunting rifles and condensing them down to 2 high(er) end or custom rifles with really good glass vs most of the cheaper rifles I have now with mediocre glass. The debate is what calibers do I want. I think 1 will be a 300 Win or Wby or maybe a 338 Win, the other is where I am struggling to make a choice. I have never been let down by my 30-06 or 308 but there are so many other good choices out there like 7-08, 208AI, 6.5-06, 300WSM, etc. So, what would be your choice for the second rifle chambering given the following guidelines:
Typical Alabama whitetail woods, river bottoms and the mountains of NE Alabama with most shots less that 300 yards with the possibility of a midwest trip some day. This will be my primary hunting rifle. If I ever get to go WEST and hunt I would most likely take the 300 or 338. No restrictions on action length, I have no preference. No 270 win Nothing that is an odd ball caliber. Must have a good selection of factory available ammo, although I do reload I don't want to be tied down to it. Must perform well out of no longer than a 22" barrel, preferably a 20".
The harder choice after this will be what rifle(s) to buy. Bergara, Kimber, Christensen, Cooper, Montana or custom built.
What are yall's thoughts?

2 is not enough. If one has a failure of any kind you're down to one. One is why you had 2 when this started.
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

I've got a shucks ton of rifles in a bunch of different calibers. 90% of the time I carry one of two. Winchester model 70 in .300 Win mag when I'm on the clear cuts, Remington model seven in 7mm.08 for everything else.

30-06 and 7 mag
If you didn’t say an odd round I’d go with a 6.5 (whatever you want to add after) I’d go PRC. and a magnum round

I wouldn't have a 300 magnum of any variety with less than a 24" barrel. Too much muzzle blast and you start to lose velocity rapidly with every in you cut.
A 338 win mag would definitely be one of my choices 😀 especially if you want to go west for bigger critters. Works great on little Alabama whitetais also at the ranges you mentioned, and beyond. 👍👍
A 6.5 PRC would be a great choice for reaching way out there for deer if you ever had a notion to do such things. If you ever go to Kansas or somewhere similar you will appreciate a flat shooting gun with high BC bullets to resist wind drift.
Also, the idea of only 2 rifles is ludicrous....

I’m thinking of getting a .308. Top it with a Meopta with a 50mm objective, maybe a 56. But I’m really enjoying the 243 I’ve hunted with this season.

The 3006 & 308 will offer more selections in bullets than anything else and both will kill anything in North America

I would get a 20" Model 7 HS Precision in 7mm-08.
The other one would be a .300 WBY Mark V

The magnum wether it be a 300 or 338 will definitely be a 26" barrel, any shorter is a waste in my opinion.
How does the 6.5 PRC, the 6.5-06 and the 280AI compare and what do they offer over the ol faithful 30-06 with 165s? The idea of high BC bullets from either of the previous 3 really shines out west in the wind but I don't know that they offer any advantage here where 90% of my hunting will be less that 300 yards. Also I don't know this to be absolute truth but I've heard and read that the high BC bullets don't kill as well (fast) as the old standby lower BC bullets from traditional cartridges because of the higher sectional density and the tendiacy to penetrate so well. Any truth to that? Seems that that may be why the 25-06 and 257Wby are such stone cold killers as the 25 cal bullets don't have great BC or SD. The same for cup and core 150s from a -06 or 308. IMHO, 24" barrels are the way to go unless it's a big magnum like a 300 Weatherby, 300 RUM or similar, where the extra barrel length is good. Absolutely no need for a 26" barrel on a 338 win mag, and 24" is just right for a 300 WSM or 300 winny. I've found barrels over 24" start to be a PITA to handle in the woods or a shootin house. If you add a brake its 28" and would only use a gun like that for long range shooting from a house. 6.5 PRC with a 143 ELD X will flat out kill deer way out there. Buddy of mine dropped a doe in her tracks at 820 yards last week with that combo, in a 10 MPH cross wind. Said he allowed for about a foot of wind drift and didn't need that much.

Personally I have no use for a 243 for deer hunting. That's just a personal thing so don't get y'alls drawers all waded up. I'll always have one because I inherated it, but it won't get hunted with much at all.

There will be a 223, 243 and a 30-06 in the safe regardless. Seems it'd be hard to beat a 308win and a 300wby combo. Maybe only by adding a fast, flat something in the middle like a 6.5 job or maybe even a 257Wby.
Anybody got anything for what I posted earlier about high BC bullets vs low BC bullets killing faster at closer ranges?
Keep the ideas rolling guys, who knows, there may be someone else we help along the way. BC won't matter, but bullet construction does. Bullets are designed to perform within a certain velocity range. To make a bullet perform at long range, or lower velocity, it has to be more fragile, which means more fragmentation at close range or high velocity. Tougher bullets hold together at closer ranges or higher velocity but may fail to expand at long range or low velocity. Match bullet selection to your quarry and anticipated range. Despite what some folks say, Alabama deer ain't tough to kill and a rapidly expanding bullet just behind the shoulder will kill it fast.

If a fella had to narrow it down to any less than 29 or 30 I just don’t know what I would do. BUT theoretically speaking, IF I could only be buried with 2 rifles...one would be a Weatherby MarkV 6-lug carbine chambered in 7-08 strapped into a McMillan Sako Classic stock and the other would be a Kimber Montana w/ a Brux #3 fluted barrel chambered in .30-06 with a 1-10” twist.

This would be my choice as well . I can go heavy with the 338 and handle most anything in NA and beyond or light and hunt Deer at home . The 25-06 can go light for varmits or heavy for Deer and most lower 48 stuff .

I would think 300win mag and a 308 should pretty well have you covered. Since you reload, it is nice to have 2 guns that both use .308 projectiles. 300 winmag is good for everything in North America and more and is pretty flat shooting. I would probably have the win mag custom built or maybe a Christensen Arms Ridgeline titanium. For the 308 I would get something nice and lite with a 20" or 18” carbon wrapped barrel also maybe in CA Ridgeline titanium or custom. Can handload the 308 full power or even reduced power loads or even subsonic for whatever purpose you need. To mix things up even more I would maybe even get the 308 in a BLR levergun. I have a soft spot for lever guns. I would even go as far as to say 300 win mag and 30-30. One new gun with new technology and one just classic, fast handling, and proven lever gun. Both using .308 projo's.

This is my exact go to. I've used my 300WSM with a 22" barrel shooting 180gr federal trophy bonded tip bullets on everything from spring buck to zebra in Africa to whitetails, bear, elk and moose here. It has never let me down. It is overkill for deer but it still drops them for my deer/hog hunting here I've been using a 18" barreled Ruger American lately and liking it.

I did the exact thing you’re talking about doing. I trimmed down to two do all rifles with great dependable glass. A 7mm-08 and a .280AI
Sent leaning against a big oak in knee deep water

I will preface this by saying I would rather be dead or turn gay than be limited to 2 rifles. Having said that, for deer I could narrow it down to 3.
.300 win or wby. .450 marlin or .45-70 .308 or .7-08
I am sorry, I know that is a lot.
I feel nauseous now and very depressed. I am going to go snort a line of Lexapro and have diarrhea now!

So we (I) pretty much got the Bean field/out west/long range caliber nailed down to a 300. Now let's make this a little more interesting. Possiby 3 guns max.
Mountain rifle: short, light, quick handling, smooth as a baby's ass, less than 200 yards max shot opportunity. Usually no more than 125ish. What caliber for in the shoulder shots, knockem flat on their ass, no tracking required, BIG exit holes. Again action length and recoil don't matter. 308 30-06 300wsm 358win 35whelen 450/45-70 ?????? Marlin lever action. In 35 Remington, 308 marlin 444 marlin 45 70
