Hello everyone. Just getting back into hunting, I know it's late into the season, but looking to do some squirrel hunting. I've never hjnted them before, and really could us some help. My son and I went out yesterday to Oakmulgee around 1530hrs, but no luck seeing anything. We mainly walked a trail off rd 715 off of 49 through some pines. Spooked a turkey, but that was it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Going to try again tomorrow.

Why the fox squirrels particalty? Would gray squirrels be ok? If eating then that’s what you would want imo. JW

Mainly looking for fox squirrels due to the size and color. I would like to have one to mount. Has far as greys go, yes I'm looking for those too. Never had squirrel before, but I hear they are really good, and I found a receipe for hot wing squirrel.

Also, went out again today from 1130-1600hrs with no luck. Someone told me that it's too cold for squirrels right now. Is this possible?

Squirrels don’t particularly like this wind, just ease along slowly, setting down ever so often in some hardwoods. You’ll find some

The best way to find squirrels is to deer hunt. Seems like I see tons whenever I am on a deer stand and very few when I squirrel hunt.

I really only see fox squirrels around farmland. I know they exist in other areas but around agriculture is where I always see them. You won't find anything but gray squirrels in a thicket. You need more open areas hardwood tree lots and fence rows. NOT a pine thicket. That's the wrong place to be looking.

The best way to find a fox squirrel in look around a corn field in the early fall and walk the perimeter just inside the woods and look for some corn cobs. That has always worked for me if I am hunting an area where I don't know what's there.

I am trying to think of where there is a public place to hunt that would have them.... maybe Swan Creek or Wheeler Refuge. We use to see fox squirrels up there all the time duck hunting and all along the river on TVA land between there and Guntersville.
