Bucks that are in better physical shape will shed later than the ones that are not.

My wife had to stop and let a buck with what she described as a nice rack get out of the road yesterday. Didn't seem to have much concern that she was there.

(15th St. Road past Lick Creek at the top of the hill headed toward Bessemer).

Bucks at our place still have their headgear...one of my buddies has a place in Cullman Co., and he got pics of a buck that'd already shed on Feb. 25! I was surprised!!!

I found 2 fresh rubs today in Washington Co. Explain that! Also saw where several scrapes had been pawed in since the rain! That was 2 days ago!

Okay. You see when a doe has her monthly estrous cycle, the smell really gets to the bucks. They go crazy and try to build up their neck muscles so they rub on trees. They also paw the ground and pee on the fresh dirt. It drives the does crazy. Then they get married and have babies. How's that? laugh laugh LOL I know I'm a smartass, you don't have to tell me.

Bucks are "ready" from the time they shed velvet till they cast their antlers. In LA where rut is late ,prolly not that rare to see a rub or scrape in early March. Bout the same as seeing some in early to mid Feb. in N.A.

So they are following a hot doe in February and their horns fall off and it's game over? I don't think so.

The wide window of spotted fawn sightings in this state should be proof enough that a buck can breed before he sheds his velvet, and way after he may shed his antlers.

You're right it is pretty common down here! I've seen bucks running does up to the first week of April while turkey hunting. I was just fishing for the extended season debate!... I wish they'd shorten deer season so the woods would have more time to settle before turkey season!

I never say never. I do say anythings possible, maybe. That being said, bucks shed velvet about 3rd week in Sept. then cast anytime from early Feb till mid April. So that's as much as 7 months with hard antler, and high testosterone. I doubt many does are bred outside that 7 month window anywhere.

Do the math for the most extreme, both early and late fawn sightings, count back 200 days and see if it falls in the 7 month window.

You're fishing in the wrong pond here. The season DOES NOT need to be extended into Feb. in North Bama. Nuff said, no debate!!!!!
