My boys are old enough that I’m ready to get back in the woods with them. So, I’m looking for a family oriented club for 20/21. What I mean by family oriented is kids welcome. I’ve got three boys but would only be taking up two spots at a time as one of my younger boys (twins) would be with me, and the other with my older son. We don’t have to kill trophy bucks every outing, as deer sightings are more important right now. Prefer Shelby county, but would go Coosa County, Chilton County, or Bibb. Please let me know if you have, or know, of anything.

I would never join a family oriented club.
"Family Oriented" is a code word for, "bring all your tribe and all your neighbors". Nope, not me.
If you ever run a club you'll learn quickly. Every hunter pays member dues and every guest pays a guest fee. Otherwise it becomes a circus.

My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

Unfortunately, most clubs would look at your situation as 2 members for the price of one (your current current situation), soon to be 4 members for the price of one (as your younger ones get old enough to sit by themselves). I'm sure that there are some truly family clubs around but most of your serious deer clubs with good land and a decent management plan in place (in other words, places where you are going to see a lot of game and a few decent bucks if you're lucky) will view your situation as stated in the first sentence. My suggestion is to try to find 100 to 150 acres that you could lease for just you and your boys to hunt. You can control the pressure, make all the rules and the younger ones can kill whatever you feel like letting them shoot. Pulling the trigger is important for young hunters. They quickly get bored if they have to pass on almost every deer they see.

I have ran a club and agree, it can be abused real quick if you don’t have a clear understanding as to what is and isn’t allowed, as well as the having the right members.

With your knowledge though, you should be able to find something. Finding a place that allows kids to shoot some, but still have deer to watch is a diamond in the rough. I think a lot of kids enjoyment comes from camp also. A good atmosphere (if you’re going to stay at the club) is as important as having deer to watch. At least it was for me growing up. Good luck.

We had a dude with 4 boys who all hunted the place. Five guys hunting for the price of one! What a fiasco.

That’s why we have a rule that one paid membership can only occupy two stands while hunting.

Gotcha beat. Husband, wife, and 7 kids between 9 and 17.

That's true but it also is important for them to learn to be patient , learn to enjoy the outdoors , and learn that hunting is more than just about pulling the trigger.

That’s why I stated we would only occupy two spots. I’ve seen that abused as well. When I ran a club we had a guy, his wife and son all under one membership. Mostly it was just him and his son so even when the wife occasionally came, it wasn’t that big of a deal. Then the holidays rolled around and they showed up with her kids too. So it was him, his wife, his son, and her two or three. I can’t remember exactly how many she had. Ended up covering about 5-6 stands all through the holidays. That rule was changed after that year. As my boys get older, I will pay an additional membership just out of fairness, even if they are still youths.
