A couple of years ago I bought 2 Mustang Elite 38 PFDs that were new/year old stock still on the shelf for about 1/2 what they normally sell for. They were $217 each on clearance. Shop around and you'll find a deal. These were in MN.
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

I've got a couple of $50 BPS ones that I've liked so far. Comfortable and not crazy $$

This is your life and a lot more to consider than price. Of course we all want best price or a deal. The main consideration should be the amount or pounds of flotation one provides. I think the absolute best are the Mustangs with 38 pounds. A lot of the cheaper ones only provide 21 pounds. I also recommend that you purchase the re-charge kit for your particular vest, and keep it in your dry storage.

For my job I have to wear a PFD. We have all sorts of PFDs to choose from based on what work we are doing. We are strictly using Mustang inflatable PFDs. We abuse our equipment and the PFD is no exception. We leak test them once a year and they always hold up. We usually get 3 years out of ours, so the average user/fisherman could get at least 3 times that. Also we have training where we jump in the deep end of a swimming pool with waders and an inflatable PFD on. It’ll bring you to the surface. I trust my life with them. Well worth the money. We use PFD's extensively in my job, as well. The only place we're allowed to even have inflatables in with our Fast Rescue Craft. All other applications require a closed cell foam work vest.

I used to wear one all of the time until it blew up on me while I was driving the boat for no reason but luckily I was just idling and not up running. It didn't hurt me or anything just scared the hell out of me since I was not expecting it at all. Another thing that I kept running into was that it would randomly blow up inside the compartment of the boat and I never could figure out exactly why other than maybe humidity set it off. What brand did you have? I wear my Mustang in the rain all the time and it never once blew up, so I know it couldn’t be humidity. Some of the older models used a pill that would deploy the PFD when wet. The pill style deployment has since been abandoned by most manufacturers because of “dry” deployments. I wonder if you had that style?
