I have a pup that is pretty sharp in all aspects, but with him being a Boykin he gets distracted easliy. I am looking to hone in on some of those skills and traits that make a gundog great when establishing a solid foundation of obedience training. What are some of those skills that I need to focus on? Or better yet, what are some things that make your dog great? Any and all input is appreciated.

Run and play that dog slap out before you start your training each day, it will pay off big time.

Either force fetch him or have someone else ff him for you. Takes obedience to different level. Make sure he is properly collar conditioned before using an e collar.

Reward the dog every time he makes eye contact with you. Slowly start bringing distractions in. Reward every time, don’t punish them for being distracted. Eventually the dog will learn to tune out the distractions and focus only on you.

Find a good training program that suit yours needs and that you're comfortable with and stick with it. There are a lot of videos and books that are useful, but I found it better to stick with one program because all the steps act as building blocks, so they all come together in the end

Daughter's Boykin is right at 4 months. Has kennel, sit, stay pretty good. Will hold stay in her kennel while I go get her food and waits until given the OK before beginning to eat. Getting better on heel but sometimes she wants to face you. Come is so-so, depends on what's going on around her.

"Cull" is just another four letter word...
