Buddies boy shot a doe yesterday hit it in the front of the shoulder and came out the brisket. He told me they was looking for it so I decided to ride over. Thought what the heck gonna take my dog with me just to see what happens. They had trailed it about 200 yards when I got there and blood was getting kinda thin. I let the dog smell and lick a bloody leaf and joking said find the deer. She ran around a second and took off down a powerline then turned up in the woods and over the hill. We saw blood on the powerline but didn't find any going up in the woods so kept trying to track it for a few minutes. Long story short she came back with a little blood on her so I started following her back. As I was going behind her I started seeing blood. Then she jumped straight up a few times like she saw a squirrel and took off. Barked a couple time and I started the way she was. Got to where I could see her and there she was standing over the deer looking at me. May be a fluke but im gonna try her next chance I get.

Had my German Shepard find two just like that. He jumped the first one and she ended up getting away. He found the second one on a morning after I shot a small 8 point and it got into some thick stuff on the bank of a spring.

I've seen two labs find deer that had no hunting experience at all...

A few years ago my older lab went with me to help find one. When we arrived the dear had already been found but I didnt know that so we started where we were told he was shot, she went drop for drop to where the deer had finally stopped with no real trouble. She then followed the trail back to the barn where the deer was on the back of the atv and dripping, probably 10' between each drop. I was proud, but never had an opportunity to recreate it. I guess it can happen, a nose knows.

A lab will find one in a hurry, especially if it’s hungry.

I’ve taken my GSP on one track and she found the deer. It was the morning after the shot and I think she just winded the deer kind of grid searching.
