Bringing an old thread back, but a good interview is out there on The Hunting Public's podcast with Troy Fowler, a.k.a. the "Ranch Fairy". He's primarily a pig hunter and outfitter in TX, but the insights and experience he's got hunting with heavy arrows is pretty interesting to listen to.

Yeah, I've watched his stuff. I'm putting together some 612gr. projectiles for hogs.

I shot a 250 pound boar with a 1 1/2 shield with my 570 grain arra, penetration was thru the near shoulder and stopped at the skin on opp shoulder, he went maybe 20 yards.

I have NO reason to shoot arrows that heavy. 700+ grains be floating in the air too long for my type hunting.

I was looking at these online the other day Troy. What grain broadhead are you shooting?

Slippin, shooting 180 gr heads. Those heads will stay sharp all season and are like a scalpel sharp.

What kind of inserts are you heavy arrow fellers using? I’ve never actually built an arrow myself, just bought them from a pro shop cut to length with whatever inserts they installed. I’d like to take a crack at this “hand loading” heavy arrows idea this off season.

I don't call my arrows heavy, I call them what I require. I want my arrows 450-500gr. Weight for penetration and a flatter trajectory. I'm not planning my hunts on short range shots, so I'm not shooting a 600+ grain arrow. My arrows have a 42gr insert and 125gr tips, total weight 463gr. I have the penetration I need which was proven on my bull this year. I do have some 150gr tip I may shoot at a bear this year, still undecided. I still like to play with arrow weights and my chrono. Y'day I shot 3 weights with 2 different bows.

Compound bow vs recurve are in play as well, no one has really mentioned what type bow they're shooting
