so ... around about the turn of the New Year, i started noticing some issues with my postal mail ... the first thing that began to happen was outgoing mail would take a very long time to arrive (ie bill payment late notices started to arrive) ... then i started noticing that bills woudn't even show up at all (bills would show up for 2 months instead of the normal 1 month) ... next came a series of wadded up parcels of mail, mail being ripped open, and mail arriving WET (this summer) when it hadn't rained in days ... finally, this past week, my mail stopped arriving altogether ...

turns out - i'd received a piece of mail from the Postmaster (Northport, AL) who said they'd inspected my mailbox & it was 5" short of the required height of rural mailboxes (which is 41-45" to the bottom of the mailbox) & the mailbox should be stationed 6-8" from the curb/side of the road ... Friday, i got out there with my post hole diggers & dug up my post box & re-located it on my property ... 6" from the side of the road, and precisely 41" tall to the bottom of the box ... i then go inside & call the Postmaster & she tells me that ONE mail carrier (new on the route), who happens to be a union worker, is pitching a fit about all us rednecks out in the county that have low mailboxes ... this carrier made the Postmaster go out & inspect & write up over 250 customers & demand they fix their mailboxes -- some of whom have masonry boxes ... they have been withholding my mail (which I'd noticed for several days) b/c i was out of compliance ... i instructed her to release my damn mail immediately as i can prove i'm back in compliance for sure now ... the crazy thing is this required height was written for the CITY -- where carriers are using USPS trucks & the window is higher than what's on your car (which most rural carriers use) ... [i say CITY b/c the picture on the letter is a mail truck -- not somebody's car that most folks use to delivery mail in the county]

she said that if my mail issues continue, my only recourse is to contact Senator Shelby's office & file a complaint ...

I got one of these notices a few months back. Admittedly, my mailbox was out of compliance in more ways than it was in compliance, but hey, this is rural America. So, I bought a new one that's made of plastic and has rear access to I don't have to stand in the road to get my mail. I laid it beside the road in order to get my perfect measurements for setting the 4x4 post that it mounts on. Then I dug the hole, set the post in concrete and mounted the mailbox. Since that day I have found 3 passenger side automobile rearview mirrors in my yard, noticed numerous scratches and ding appear on the traffic side of my mailbox, had one gentleman come down my driveway in a Ford Ranger pickup to discuss his broken off passenger side mirror and witnessed one driver hit my mailbox with his passenger mirror and keep going. I hate government regs as much or more than anybody but I sure am glad that I bought a plastic mailbox to replace my old metal one. It has held up well to the adverse affects and rigors of compliance with Postal Regulations.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

i'm expecting a similar outcome as you, Yote, b/c mine now is VERY close to the road, in a curve, & a lot of drivers cut it close ... i thought i was doing the carrier a favor by putting my mailbox OFF the road & out of traffic ... but apparently, rural carries like to live life dangerously ... this is an accident waiting to happen now

I think I would wait by the mailbox to have a talk with that mail carrier

based on what that particular carrier has done in the past, 100% chance they just keep driving.

below is just one example of what i'm talking about -- in terms of how my mail is showing up ... the interesting thing about THIS one is -- i had to call Alabama Power & request they send me out another bill b/c i hadn't received mine for the month -- and this is how it showed up in my box -- no rain at all!! if memory serves me right, the original Alabama Power bill did show up -- but when it did, i would have been delinquent on my payment ...

A little over 25 years ago, I worked for a small municipality as a heavy equipment operator. Since I was one of the few that had a CDL, I drove the garbage truck two days a week. The mail carrier there HATED me for some reason, and would make it a point to drive her mail carrier vehicle right up to the front of the truck, nose to nose, while I was stopped, and then expect me to back up out of her way. (Which I never did.). She used to call the city and complain about me nearly every week, because I would not give here the “right of way, that she was entitled to as a carrier”. Never mind that I was at a dead stop and she pulled up to me. She used to spout off some kind of regulation about how as a mail carrier, she even had right of way over an ambulance that was in an emergency situation. I always figured if she wanted to try and push that big garbage truck out of the way, with her little red Jeep, then she was more than welcome to give it her best shot.

GH, while on the phone w/the Postmaster, she said it's this one carrier she's had problems with -- BUT b/c they're union, she can't do anything about it ... don't know if that's true or not, but that's her story ... it was useful having her name (which she wrote on the official letter) b/c it made the conversation MUCH more professional & "personal" - hence my request for the PI's name ... i'm not going to blast anybody - i just want the problem fixed

it's gotten so bad, i don't mail ANYTHING from my house anymore; i have to take all my bills/outgoing letters to post office location & mail from there to have any guarantee it'll show up on the other end ... ridiculous

That is the employee acting the fool and those pictures are just what you need to have him/her receive an "unpaid vacation". Sorry but Dad's (he is a retired Postal Inspector) most current list does not show who the Inspector is for your area. I will try to contact the OIC in Atlanta but with the holidays is might take several days to receive a reply. Likely just best to email the customer service.

USPS left several of my packages in the rain. Too lazy to walk to the front porch. Lazy is an understatement.

I was replying to W.C., not you. You seem to be going about things the correct way even though most of us would like to "jump on someone with both feet". You will have seen my last, well next to last, reply by now. Good luck.

This makes me want to write a thank you note to my local postal inspector.
Fortunately we have two very good rural carriers (a man and woman who alternate the route) who will bring grandaddy packages to the door or leave them in a safe place. The guy even loves to get out and spend a couple of minutes playing with my chocolate lab.
