I inherited my dad's old shotgun when he passed away a couple of years ago and it has sat in my safe since I got it. Today I busted it out and drilled the trigger lock off of it and have decided to clean her up (a little rusty all over). Looking forward to getting her cleaned up and back in the field.

It has a Poly Choke on it, which I've never used. Reading online, people either love them or hate them (sounds like a Ford/Chevy argument to me!!).

I'll get some pics posted up of the cleanup process to show ya'll. This gun was bought for my dad by my grandfather the year he was born (1947), and I'm proud to have it in my safe now.

Very well made shotguns. As for the poly choke, those who love them don't know any better.

There are two types of gun enthusiasts ... Those who have been F#CKED by PTG and those who will be!

This ^^^^. Poly-chokes are great at what they do and the only thing wrong with them is they are ugly as hammered dogchit.

Mighty fine scattergun sethjamtoe, can’t wait to see pics of her after you clean it up.

Yessir! I’m always gonna shoot what makes me happy and I want everyone else to do the same! If you shoot one be proud of it and don’t worry what anyone else thinks. - SJ22

If you were not already aware, just remember that an Ithaca 37 of that vintage will not have a trigger disconnector, meaning it will fire if you hold the trigger down and pump it. If you grew up shooting modern pump guns you may not be conditioned to release the trigger fully after firing when a follow up shot may be required (like in a dove shoot). The Ithaca 37 will cure you of that habit. I recall being at a dove shoot a few years ago and a gentleman thought his new-to-him old Ithaca 37 was defective because it was "slam firing."

Also, if you search the internet for Ithaca Gun Field Maintenance Instructions Model 37 and Model 87 Pump Action Shotgun, there's a website where you can download a PDF of the old Ithaca manual. It has fairly good instructions for disassembly. I've used it to completely disassemble three of them for thorough cleaning. They are great guns and are a joy to handle. I especially like the smaller-framed 20s and 16s. And last I looked, the market hasn't yet recognized them for what they are (unlike the Model 12), so good examples can be had for reasonable prices.

As for a polychoke, I'm in the "can't stand them" crowd, particularly on a gun like the 37 that has such great lines. But, you've got more than an Ithaca 37 with a polychoke, you've got an incredible, tangible piece of family history.
