My nephew is coming into town for Thanksgiving and he is 8 years old. He's never been shooting and asked if I would take him since my brother doesn't have anywhere to take him living in Atlanta.

I plan on letting him shoot my .223 and youth .410 and my granddaddies old iron sight .22 rifle at some pumpkins and targets at our lease. I've got the basic eye protection and ear protection and a shooting rest set up for him to use. I've taken lots of people shooting for the first time but never a kid. Is there anything else I could bring to make it more enjoyable for him? Obviously, stressing gun safety is the most important thing just trying to think of things I may have forgotten.

I also have different caliber pistols available but can't decide if those are good to start with or let him get comfortable with the above mentioned long guns first since they manage recoil better. I've also got different long guns that are a bit bigger like 12 gauge, 16 gauge, .270 and 30-30 but thinking of leaving those at home for same reason as the pistols.

Get some of the cheapest cans of soda you can buy. Shake em up before you set them out. They will explode or foam up when shot. Set up some steel targets if you have some so they can hear the ping when they hit em. When I have taken new people, especially kids out, they like to see the reaction of hitting what they shoot at. Kids love to watch the soda can explode. They tend to enjoy it more than just putting holes in a piece of paper.

Start with the .22

The more reactive targets the better. My kids get tired of shooting paper after a magazine or 2 but give them a small steel target, spinner of some type, cans, bottles, etc. and they'll shoot all afternoon

And me having to explain to my brother why his son came home bald and deaf (if alive at all). I'll save that for the grown ups lol.

I like the idea of a spinner target. Bet I can get an affordable one around town somewhere. I also like the idea of the shaken up soda cans. Good cheap target! Thanks guys, if you think of anything else feel free to share it!

Start him out on a 338 Lapua and a 10 gauge single barrel, just to make sure it's something he enjoys doing. 😁😁😁

EAR protection.

If you have lead sled, bring the 270. Let him shoot that a few times.

No lead sled unfortunately. If anyone in the Auburn/Opelika area wants to let me borrow one for a few days let me know beers I would like for him to see what a "big rifle" is capable of, though.

270 for an 8 year old is a bit much. But the kids I know didn’t even learn how to drive a tractor till they were like 5, so they’re late bloomers laugh

Cucumbers make great targets for a .22. The will send pieces 10 ft in the air. Best of all, you don’t have to pick up the trash when done.

Was thinking of doing some apples/oranges since they're so cheap right now at Sam's. Might add a few cucumbers. As fun as the soda sounds I imagine it would be a pain to clean up...

^^^ good idea; the main thing w/kids is to "have fun"; i wouldn't go TOO hard core on the safety thing tbh - YES, of course, it's important, but on the first time out, control/limit ammo, keep the barrel down-range, and let it ride ... the other thing i've learned w/kids is -- when they're done, pack it up & go on in ... if he catches on real quick, kids generally love "competition" esp if there's a prize related to it -- challenge him to shoot closest to target & put some money on the line LOL ... my girls loved stealing money out of my pocket - and of course, if they shot good, i'd pump 'em up pretty good ... but, have fun, man - these are memories you're making w/him ...
