If we're gonna make all-electric vehicles, ok fine. But why do so many electric or hybrid vehicles have to be ugly as sin?

So that people won't buy them. It's been this way for 20 years. The companies can say "we've made these cars, why won't people purchase them?". Heaven forbid the electric cars be identical to the gasoline vehicles.

It will never catch on. Too much infrastructure already in place invested in gasoline. There are probably 10,000 gas stations alone in Alabama that would have to be converted over. It won't happen. It's like Jimmy Carter trying to force us to convert over to the metric system all over again.

It will eventually happen.........but won't be widespread until you can get a legitimate 400-500 mile range on a quick charge (and by "quick", I'm talking under an hour)

Check back in 10 years. It's coming and it's going to happen aggressively.

Huh? Tesla batteries are thought to be good for 400,000-500,000 miles and their R&D is saying the next generation batteries will still be at 90% capacity after 1,000,000 miles.

1,000,000 mile battery

Electric cars are coming whether we like it or not. Y'all that know me know my love affair with the internal combustion engine in motorcycles, cars, trucks and tractors, but the electric cars are coming and I'm starting to come around on the whole idea. I can see me one day owning an electric get around vehicle and still owning a gas powered motorcycle and/or fun car. I used to think cordless tools were stupid toys and not serious tools, but now all I use 90% of the time are cordless tools. Technology changes and sometimes we have to be dragged along kicking and screaming.

When you think about it, electricity can't be shipped (per se) from overseas and it has to be produced locally. So instead of making a bunch of Middle Eastern terrorist supporters and South American Socialist filthy rich it provides jobs at the power plant for your hunting buddies.

Personally, I think it looks damn good for an SUV, and the performance on the top of the line models will blow away most any pony car and sounds like it will rival the Vette.

Gas going back up to $4-$5 will change this conversation dramatically. It's already there in California due to taxes and regulation.

Yeah, I guess my numbers were little dated...I read articles in the past that said they were only good for about 100,000. There was a time I could - and did - do that in a couple years

A Tesla battery is like $10K now, too

Most are all ugly as sin. When we made the MDX in Lincoln we made a hybrid and it looked the exact same as the gas burner. Not sure why most auto manufacturers don’t go that route.

Interestingly enough most all vehicles will be hybrids by 2030. The federal government has put regulations in place that require auto manufacturers to achieve 50mpg throughout the majority of their fleet. Not every vehicle has to achieve the regulation but a certain percentage of their entire fleet. That means auto manufacturers are going to be making a pile of hybrids by 2030.

Because the target market is environmental wackos and nerds and both those groups want to be "different."
