Is it too late to top seed? What yall recommend this late in the game? I planted WMS Alabama Blend and wheat mixed together at a ratio of 125-150# per acre. Went to the property this weekend and after 2.5wks of growth they are looking pretty thin compared to past years when we have just done wheat. Now don't get me wrong, some plots look great but the rest have a little to be desired. Should I wait to see if they will fill in some or go ahead and top seed something in? First experience using a mix like WMS so bear with me.

How much time left to get that Elbon Rye out? I may hit a plot this weekend.

Sorry to ask in the OP’s thread, but I’m interested.

Elbon will come up just about all winter. Obviously cooler soil temps slow it up but warm spells between will keep it going

What about top seeding winter wheat. Our free fields have been under water for about 8 or so days. Don’t figure they’ll amount to much now.

Wheat takes a lil more babying than rye. Can be done just better up seed rate to 75# or so

Like 257 mentioned ER. I wouldn't top seed with no stanky wheat 🤓

Rye will actively grow as long as temps are above 36 degree's, I believe. With our weather, rye is the most dependable planting there is. It's the most versatile.

another for grain rye. I would have loved to plant earlier than I did, but the rain just wasn't there. Then we got pretty cold pretty quick, but I've got 3 inches of growth and that was less than 3 weeks ago. These super cold mornings are probably slowing it down up here in N. Alabama, but it was growing the other day just fine.
