As most hunters get older we look back on our days of hunting and we probably have one special place that we’ve hunted along the way that stands out above all others…..The place where we recall the good ol’days. We may have since moved on to greener pastures and bigger and better hunting grounds….but there’s something about that one piece of property that holds a special place in our hearts. You may have not been there in 20 years but you could still go back there today and close your eyes and walk right to the tree where you killed your first deer or the spot where your grandad took you hunting for the first time. For me that special place is in the hills and hollers of Jackson Co down along the Paint Rock River.

It was the place where I killed my first squirrel….my first rabbit….and eventually my first deer. It was where I accidentally called up my first gobbler while sitting in a shooting house in the rain just playing on a box call. Boy, if I'd just known when to put that box call down. It was where my brother took me hunting when my first girlfriend broke up with me and I thought the world was coming to an end. It was where I learned about “camp meat” when the river flooded out the road going into the property. It was where I learned how to warm up my insides on a cold morning with a little shot of whiskey hid under a rock. Yep, it was where I learned a lot of bad habits, a few good ones, and everything in between.

Wow….to think back on all the memories that were made back then and how if I only knew how special those moments would be now. If I could only go back and hike up to the top of that mountain one more time with my uncle or walk through “the bottoms” hunting squirrels with my grandmother….or just simply sit with my grandad again. If I could go back and spend one more night in that old farm house and smell the wood burning stove and listen to the older men tell stories of hunts gone by. What I wouldn’t give to have just one of those days back. I bet I wouldn’t care how many deer I saw that day or if I killed a big one….I bet I’d just be happy to be hunting with folks who are no longer here……Man, those were the good ol’ days.

Great post. Mine was the 200 acres across the road that i learned to hunt on. We bought our house and the seller said I could hunt his land like it was mine. I cut my teeth there and made alot of mistakes. I saw my first bobcat there, shot my first racked buck, watched otters scurry across a frozen pond and watched ducks fly in at sunrise. I haven't been on it in over 5 years and he has since sold the property off and someone has built a house in the middle of it. I know I'm never going to set foot on that property again but have some great memories.

For me it was hunting what used to be the La Floresta Perdida WMA in FL. We had a camp on a 40 acre piece right in the middle of it. When the WMA was leased out to hunting clubs, we got the 5,000 acres surrounding the camp. So many good memories from there I can't even count them. I killed 6 good bucks out of one tree in one season there, including what is still my personal best bow killed buck, 2 with a muzzleloader, 2 with a rifle, and 1 with a shotgun after my rifle was stolen. My buddies joked that every time they would hear me pull into the camp, they knew they were about to hear the tailgate drop. But, it eventually turned into something I didn't care for, as all hunting clubs have for me. But those early years will never be topped for me. Those were the good ol days.

Thanks!....I ain't gonna lie....I had to type that through some watery eyes. My uncle passed away about this time a couple years ago and he was the one that really took me under his wing as a kid and showed me how to hunt. He was there with me the morning I killed my first deer. Those memories put a lot bigger lump in my throat these days.

That is good stuff for sure. Even though you miss it, just think how fortunate you are to have made those memories that mean so much to you. I miss my dad every day but I know how fortunate I am to have had a father that took me dove hunting and bream fishing from the the time I was big enough to carry a bb gun or a cane pole.

I miss hunting with my Grandaddy. Hunted wherever we chose, as long as there weren't any posted signs
and we never crossed a fence. We never tried to hide, and no one ever said anything to us. That's just the
way it was back then. Back before deer hunting was the thing, QDM was never heard of. Regs were printed on a single sheet of paper. My, how times have changed.

Lots of good memories hunting. Most of these memories come from the 1980's and early 90's. Things weren't so serious then. We always seemed to kill deer but it was more about camp life or seeing deer.

Bulter County - Going to hunt at Christmas on the Crenshaw Plantation when they would have a dog drive when the ran the deer with beagles

Tallapoosa County - We would hunt once a year at the Foshee place when they ran dogs. it was great. Gather up, eat breakfast, listen to the men tell stories and talk about the big one somebody had seen last week. Load up in trucks and fly down the road to drop standers off and wait for the dogs. Getting play by play on the CB. Tried my first dip of Copenhagen before one of those hunts. Got dizzy, fell down and puked all over the barn. Last dip I ever had.

Macon & Tallapoosa Counties - being fortunate enough to hunt some big acreage tracts as a kid that allowed me to "stalk hunt" for hours without messing anybody else up. You learn a lot about the woods exploring.

Macon County - Hunting club was on a 10 mile long dirt road. There were three or four other clubs or farms. Everybody knew each other and I would go with dad at night as he made the rounds. Each club had their own set of characters. I would sit back and listen to them tell stories around the dinner table or camp fire. Learned a lot about hunting, life, drinking, women, food, country music and just about anything you could image listening to their stories.

As others have said, the clubs have changed, the properties have changed, but I could still probably walk you to any spot on a couple of those places.

Lots of memories of shooting small bucks and going home and looking at my North American Whitetail magazine and wondering how these other people have all these huge deer....

No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

This post bring tears to my eyes. Dad passed away when i was 15. Never had a grandpa to hunt with .both had passed before i was borned.the times with my dad is a special memory for me. Mostly squirrell hunting with a dog. Didn t have many deer in my area at that time we usually had a black an tan hound u could squirrel hunt in daytime an he would tree coons an possums at night. Also had a good bird dog an some quail back in the day. I wasn t old enough to carry a gun but i went with dad . No way was i left at home. We always had some kind of hunting dog. He could train a bulldog to tree squirrels. Lol.I know the times hunting with our dad meant lot to him but it means at lot more to me today because it instilled in me the desire to hunt. After dad passed away an the deer started become more numerous around our place i started deer hunting. Learned everything i know about deer hunting on my own but alway wished my dad was here to enjoy the deer hunting. Not many younger folks around here hunt at all an thats so sad.don t have kids myself. Have 3 neices so i don t have anyone to pass on the hunting lifestyle. Back in the ol days you never seen a posted sign anywhere. Just hunt where you wanted . Everything we killed we ate . Didnt kill the coons or possums just had fun hunting them. The fried quail was the best next to squirrell dumplings an gravy an biscuits. Ive had some great memories over the years hunting. Nowaday it seems about who can kill the biggest buck but to me its the memories i have over the yrs hunting. Have been blessed to have a great place to hunt just right out my back door.

The place where I grew up hunting mostly by myself no longer exists as it did back then. Theres no big timber, none of the old trails are there anymore, new roads with different names and gas well are everywhere but my memory of that place will forever be and I can still see my old haunts in my thoughts. Those were truly the Good Ole Days when I could call up my dog and us go skwerl hunting all day and it didn't matter to anyone who's property I was on. Everyone knew me and many would request a mess of skwerls every season.
It would absolutely thrill my soul when my Papaw would ask me to bring him some skwerls. He'd eat those things from nose to tail. I never could make myself eat the brain but Papaw loved'em

I had brains and eggs one time as a young kid....I can say that I've had it at least once in my life though I don't know that I'd choose to again. laugh
