I’ve never understood this and maybe someone can explain. Most of the “good” cartridges people shoot today were originally wildcats way back when. Some people will brag on a 26 Nosler while calling the 6.5 creedmoor gay. Why...? The 26 Nosler doesn’t do anything better than a 264 win mag (except belted case). The 6.5 Creedmoor is more efficient than a 260. it isn’t any faster than a .260 Remington. Actually it’s about 2-4% slower. But it was designed with its sole purpose at a TARGET cartridge. This is due to a slightly shorter case which allows one to seat those long bullets reducing jump to the lands. Long 6.5mm bullets are superior to most other calibers, when recoil is taken into consideration. The very high BC’s result in less wind drift and bullet drop. This is why you see most competitive shooters with some flavor of 6mm or 6.5mm.

For hunting purposes, 90% of people will not see the advantages. But for those shooting 500 yard + competitions it can be the difference between winning and losing.

I just don’t understand how people turn their noses up at 1 specific cartridge and hunt with a gun/cartridge that started life as a wildcat. 22-250, 257 Roberts, 338 federal, 338-06, 35 Whelen, 7-08, 270, 6.5/284, 30-06, etc, etc were ALL wildcat cartridges in the beginning. Yep even the good ol 30-06. It was based of the 30-03 cartridge.

Trying to get better results, accuracy, terminal ballistics, etc is a GOOD thing. It’s also the same reason we shoot cartridges today vs muzzle loaders of the 1800s.

people want to be different just for the sake of being different. a .270 / 30.06 / .300 WIN Mag can kill just about anything in North America at long and near ranges. If you start exploring other cartridges you're just doing it out of hobby or to be sharp. For instance.... I love a 25/06 but only because I've always fawned over that cartridge..... not for any practical application. I'm not going to get on here and try to convince others its some magic round, I just like it.

I wish more people would just say what you said above, but I think a lot of folks feel like they have to justify it by making claims that some of these less common rounds are somehow superior.

Well some are superior in certain applications...most of which have no benefit to the average shooter/hunter.

It's just the truth..... I've shot a ton of rounds that are cool..... .220 swift is fun as h3ll, it flies. A 6.5 creedmoor is cool too because it combines a lot of positives. A .338 Lapua Magnum is awesome to shoot. I still always go back to a .270 WIN because for hunting the North American Gray Ghost (or an Elk) nothing can out perform it in my opinion. Flat shooting, lots of energy, good velocity..... plus you can get Core-lokts for $18.99 a box still..... what's not to love about that. I've never lost a deer shot with my .270 (knock on wood). I'm not saying it's the best deer rifle in the world, i'm just saying I have yet to find another caliber round that has convinced me to switch from it.

Well, my comment was with regards to hunting rifles, specifically. But yeah I understand your point

I had a buddy that hunted with a Weatherby 30-378. I always asked him why he wanted to unleash that on these little Alabama deer. LOL! He liked and could afford to feed it so more power to him.

Cartridges are designed by ammo and gun companies to get your dollars. Much as the .260 is for deer if bear or elk were the quarry I'd haveta upgrade to a .338-06 because I don't think the .338 federal has the speed for 225 grainers. I'm no Dave Emary or Craig Boddington but I've handloaders since the age of 12 and if you think $40.00 a box is too much to pay then roll your own and buy brass/bullets by the 100 or 250 and see how "cheap" it gets. More you shoot the better you become.

Only hits count.

Like Skullworks said, a lot of these cartridges are vastly superior to others in certain situations. It ALL depends on how you use a rifle to hunt. A guy sitting in shooting house watching a 1 acre food plot could use just about any centerfire cartridge and not have an issue. But if you sit and watch a bean field or a big cutover then you could be absolutely hindered by certain cartridges. It all depends on how you use a rifle.

That being said there’s no one perfect deer cartridge and in my opinion bullet selection is way more important than cartridge size.

That’s makes sense. My original post was not to tell everyone how great the cartridge is for hunting (mines better than yours BS). I don’t even hunt with a creedmoor lol, I actually don’t even hunt anymore with a 6.5mm anything. I do however target shoot with them.

i have 4 rifle calibers between multiple rifles they are 30-30, .308, 5.56, and 7.62x39 no need to overcomplicate it theyll all do the same thing if i put it in the right place. people fall for all that marketing BS 1,000 yard ,1,200 yard, ballistic coefficient..... 95% dont even know what it means but it sounds cool even though you wont ever shoot it past 200

There's a lot of different cartridges that aren't that different.
