Days now are about the same length as the true rut. Triggers a fake rut with the bucks is my theory.

I’ve seen a good many on a few properties I’ve been to tracking. They were on high deer density properties with good age structure. I was told by a biologist one time that having older bucks in the population and a good age structure would cause more early scraping activity.

Saw some in Russell county weekend before last. And found a few in Coosa county this last weekend I don't consider either one of those counties mentioned to be SOUTH Alabama 🤣🤣🤣

Scrapes or Rubs South Alabama WTH? Yep. Usually starts towards the end of January Hall. Yeah, I understand when the rut is, but they generally start doing these activities sometime well before that. This will be my first year back hunting in AL in quite a number of years, I've been hunting in GA and you would start seeing scrapes/rubs very early in the season there, but obviously the rut is earlier there too. I actually just went and put my climber out about an hour ago and found a fresh rub and a couple of scrapes on a ridge with a bunch of acorns that I haven't been in this year until today

Bucks also have a little spike in testosterone not long after they shed velvet. Velvet shedding seemed to be a little late this year in South Alabama so that could possibly be part of it.

The rut ain't early this year, it's the testosterone . Think " I was ready, but she wasn't willing."
