WTH deer hunters!...…I haven't received a single call yet. I know folks ain't just become better shots this weekend. laugh It's very odd with the good hunting weather we're having. I'd have bet the farm on us getting some calls this weekend. It ain't over yet though.

The first one was just a classic shoulder shot….We tracked it a good ways before it finally petered out. I feel pretty positive the deer will live with a gimped up leg.

We got another call from a hunter just after we left the first track that said he’d shot a little buck this morning and had trailed blood for a couple hundred yards before finally losing it. He thought maybe he’d just hit low but felt like it was a killing hit. He hadn’t recovered his arrow so he didn’t know if it was still in the deer or he had just over looked it while tracking. It turned out to be a pretty straight forward to the deer where we found him at around 700 yards from the hit site. The dogs burnt this one up and tracked it about as fast as we could walk to keep up with them. The hunter was pretty dang accurate too about where he’d hit on this one. It was low about middle of the body. When he gutted it you could see where the broadhead had just caught part of the liver. I believe he likely pushed this deer a little. There were a few good spots of blood where the deer stood for several minutes at each spot. I figure he was just out ahead of the hunter tracking him.

Call just came in for tomorrow morning. The hunter shot what he said was a very mature buck at 17 yards from a 12 foot ladder stand. He feels like he hit low behind the shoulder. The deer was favoring his off side leg as it ran off. They trailed decent to good blood for 400-500 yards and then jumped the buck....(also reported finding some brown junk too). Instead of backing out they kept on tracking. cry By this time the deer had ran onto the neighbors property and they had called him to get permission to track. The neighbor is who I talked to and who finally called them off and talked them into backing out. grin

I think there’s a good chance of recovery on this one just depending on where the deer ran after they jumped him. He probably hit a little farther back than he thought on a quartering away shot and likely pretty low....it could be a brisket shot as well. As long as there aren’t any ponds or deep creeks for him to sink in then he should just be 200-500 yards past where they backed out….hopefully. The bad thing about what has happened is that they’ve caused the buck to leave a strong wounded scent line for probably a dang ½ mile or more through the woods. There’s a good chance of yotes coming through and picking up on it. If we’re lucky he’ll be dead by the time they find him…if not they may get him up and run him for who knows how far. We’ll just have to see how it plays out.

To be continued.....

This track was another prime example of why it’s a good idea to play things conservatively even if you think you’ve made a good shot. I’ll post a picture at the end showing the entry hole and you’ll see that it was actually a pretty dang good hit….however….because the hunter got in behind the deer tracking him too soon…..we ended up finding him around 1200-1400 yards from the hit site. That’s roughly ¾’s of a mile.

The dogs did great on this one. The buck was about 600-700 yards past where the hunter backed out. They took us straight to a big creek that the deer had actually already crossed one time last night while the hunter was pushing him. We got to the edge of the creek and Shelby went off in it then came back while Otis started working down the bank. After a minute though Otis came back and he too started wanting to go in the creek. Both dogs were working back and forth and into the water indicating that the deer had gone in. One of the hunters spotted blood on the bank verifying it but there wasn’t any deer to be seen. I told them that I’d be really surprised if the deer went into the creek and kept going with a wound like we expected to have.

We had a small group with us so I started working down creek to see if I could spot him in the water while some other guys kept looking up creek and at the spot where he went in. No sooner than I had gotten about 50 yards down creek one of the guys said “There he is!!”……He had sank to the bottom and you could just make out part of the rack and belly down submerged in the creek. We were very fortunate that he sank in a relatively shallow part of the creek because it wasn’t 20 yards down creek to where it got deep and we’d have never seen him in there.

[Linked Image]

Here’s the entry wound…..exit is just about the exact same place on the other side…..and he went ¾ of a mile……Had he not been pushed it would have likely been 200-250 ish range.
