I had to put down our lab today, so we’ll be in need of another lab puppy in the upcoming months. I want to read up /watch videos of good training methods well before I bring one home. What are some good books/videos for lab training?

I have a Danny Farmer - Judy Aycock retriever training basics. on line $40.00. Like any thing you do you can spend as much as you want on it. There a RTR Retriever Training Forum. a lot like the ALDEER site. You can search different topics and ask questions. several pro trainers are on the site regularly. Find a program and stick with it. Sorry to hear about putting your dog down.

Definitely check out Stonnie Dennis on YouTube, if you go to his profile he has a section dedicated to training labs. He has videos of training that he starts from 8 weeks old. I’ve had great success with it.

Bill hillmanns video is not cheap. But it’s very thorough and detailed. He shows different dogs doing the same training to show different dog personalities . It will pretty much take you from 3-4 months old until you are ready to force fetch. I would also get the Chris Akins video duck dog basics. It’s not as detailed but he has a lot of things to get your dog ready to hunt that’s not in bills 1st video and he also goes over force fetch . Chris Akins video is only like $25. You can get it at gundogsupply.com. Whatever you do watch all the videos all the way through so you can be ready for what’s to come.

I’m not too far from you and can help you hands on if you want. Probably got some books and dvd’s Laying around you could use.
