I got back on fb a while back, and follow some of theme deer hunting fb things myself. Is it just me or do people start there kids off at like 4 years old now killing deer???? What ever happened to learning how to shoot a .22 then going squirrel hunting? I’m all for kids hunting, but 5-6 year old seems young to me. I learned how to rabbit and squirrel hunt before i learned how to deer hunt. And the small game hunting taught me a lot about deer hunting and woods and gun safety. I was 12 when I killed my first deer, and was hunting by myself then as well.

I’ve heard people say, and read it on this site, “I’ve been taking my kid to the deer stand since they were in diapers.” My question to that is “why”? A kid that young has absolutely zero understanding of what’s going on, won’t sit still or be quiet, and dang sure will alert a deer’s nose if they happen to mess up that diaper. Every kid is different. My 14 year old killed his first deer when he was a month shy of being 7 years old. My nearly 12 year old twin boys haven’t gotten there yet.
If voting made any difference, they wouldn’t let us do it.-Mark Twain

Shot Steel plates idpa and ipsc 3 gun and rifle golf. Yet to see a child from those environments not be a good shot. Won't publicly call the young man's name but at the age of 10 saw him blaze a 6 plate rack under 5 seconds using his pops .38 super. Hunting and shooting go better with hitting shots knowing angles wind range and discipline(that's really key) to NOT shoot marginally.
Only hits count.

Daniel. While you were gone I learned that dad’s nowadays let their kids shoot 308’s at 4 years old to deer hunt. I had to earn my daddy’s trust first shooting birds with a pellet gun, squirrels with a 22, dove with a 410 and then a 30-30 for deer around fourteen years old. Times have changed I guess.

My two killed a deer at 7. I had no intention of letting them shoot one and honestly had no thought they would want to. They both had shot 22s and then a 243 and 300 black out. My son was and is bulls eye good at 100 and said he wanted to shoot a deer so he did. Sister was a worse shot so she practiced for 3 weeks until she became bulls eye capable at 100 yds with a 300 black out, said she wanted to shoot a deer then so she did. I have no clue if either will want to shoot one this yr or not but we are gonna be at the farm squirrell hunting, coon trapping, go cart riding, corn feeding, fire building, camera checking, food cooking, hide and seek playing, mud hole splashing etc. If they ever want to shoot another deer they are welcome to if not that's fine too we still gonna have fun outside.
The shooting is such a small part of it imo

Most kids these days bypass the B.B. gun shooting critters and small game hunting. They jump right into the big stuff, and a lot of them get burned out pretty quick. Small game hunting keeps their attention and catches them. It did me anyway. agreed. the posts about needing a smaller gun for my kid get me. When I came up if you werent big enough to carry the gun you werent big enough to do the shooting.. My dad took me and my brother for many years small game hunting before we were doing the shooting. i think that also is why you see more of the dog needed posts. The steps arent taken to show most kids or beginner hunters the basics before they start killing.

I got my 1st bb gun at 5 and was hunting by myself at 7 with a 44 marlin with my dad bringing the gun up to the ladder stand to me...ive since realized my dad is a dumbass on several different fronts...different kids for different scenarios tho...its all how they brought up..but I can say my 7 year old ain't ready to be on his own with a rifle

Last year a guy in our club took his 3 y.o. son hunting on youth day and the kid “killed” a nice buck. The dad was telling the story and showed a video of him, his wife, daughter and young son sitting in the shooting house, the child in his lap trying to look the scope of the rifle and then walking up to the dead deer in the field. When I said “where’s the video of the kid shooting the deer?” his friends all looked at me and then looked at him waiting on his answer. He mumbled something about that his daughter was doing the filming, blah, blah, blah... I then said “well I don’t believe your son shot the deer, you have everything on video BUT the shot.” That was the last conversation we ever had.
I started my kids out with B.B. guns and shooting 3D archery. They started hunting when they were able to shoot a .243 on their own and bow hunting when they could easily draw 35 lbs. Lots of these dads today try to impress others by saying “my three y.o. is just eat up with deer hunting, he LOVES it...” I’d be willing to bet that you could offer the three y.o. a choice between going to Chuckee Cheese’s or hunting and I bet the kid wouldn’t be choosing deer hunting.

I've found that in a lot of these cases where super young kids are "killing" deer, if you really dig you find that dad or grandpa was holding the rifle and aiming it, and they told Junior to reach over and touch the trigger. Then, of course, they plaster "Junior's First Deer" grip-and-grin picture on Facebook to try to impress all their "friends"......

Im the same way Daniel. I went from bb gun to .22, from shooting at birds with my red rider thinking I was doing something, to hunting squirrels and rabbits with my grandpa with a .22 or .410. I didn't even sit by myself til i was 13. It seems like kids are rushed into things these days. Especially sports, hunting, and relationships.

I have friends whose kids are all doing or have done: Travel ball at age 6, in the shooting house at age 4 and school sponsored dances in the 4th grade...…. I completely agree!!!! I don't tell anyone how to parent but in my opinion you can take the specialness away from something if you rush to GIVE it to them and not let them EARN it.

I know a couple of people who did that with their kids. I can’t understand the need to beat your chest like that and act like your life Ling child killed a deer.
