I already know what I am going to do and probably won't be persuaded to do anything different, but the following happened to me last year and several years before that in the same spot with different deer and would like to see what y'all would do in this situation in detail. Of course I know what I am going to do but maybe this conversation may shed some new light on my thinking as I have not hunted this deer before but will this year.
1-12-13 4:45am mature buck crossed the road in front of me going west to east in the only place he can easily cross for 200 yards in either direction.
1-10-15 5:00 am mature buck crossed the road in the same spot. Different deer. Same direction.
11-14-18 7:¿¿ PM. See 3.5 year old stud 8pt browsing on the side of the road about 500 yards past where the "big buck" crossing is.
This 3.5 yo buck has 14" G2s and 10" G3s. Spread is level with his ears so about 14".
1-13-19 5:00ish. Same long tined buck crossed in the exact same place as the others, about the same time, headed in the same direction. I have been in the area they are headed numerous times. Of course on a north wind it is unhuntable. Looks like the main bedding area is on the southeast side of a hill. I'm not putting up a camera in there. I'm not setting foot in there till January.

You need to follow the advice of Dan Infalt and try to kill him close to his bedding area. If you know where he's (or another bruiser) is bedding, you've got half the problem solved. I don't know of any reason why you should wait until January IF the bedding area is active at this time of year. Lota truth here. If you are 100% sure where he's bedding , I'd stay clear till the front end of pre-breeding, wait till conditions are just right. After breeding starts he may not be there. You need to have a good idea which way he'll come home a little late from a night of pre-breeding scraping and doe checking. However , if he's there now and moves about in the daylight , give him a try before pre-breeding, but don't screw it up. Slip in waaaay before daylight, the first time hunting is the highest percentage of a kill, once again, don't screw it up.Mature bucks are like grumpy old men , they wanta be left alone and won't tolerate humans in their bedroom. I don't know who Dan Infalt is , but I think he 's read my book. Or just take up road huntin'.

Well, if you got a real good wind or a good rain, I might go in there extremely early, like 0200-0300. Take a nap and be waiting at first light. Beat him there and have plenty of time for your scent to clear out. Question, what happens in January? If rut, that joker may get gone. Good luck Nailed it that deer will be gone when the rut starts

Why can you not come in from south and hunt on a Northernly direction wind? May be possible. I've walked a mile out of the way , in the mountains, waaaay before daylight to get to the right spot on the right day . If you want to kill a special buck, you often have to use special tactics.

Lot of truth being said here. It is a major highway so hunting it is a no go. This hill he is bedded on, or all of them have, is an old grown up select cut pine plantation. Thick of course. Open cedars all the way around it. I don't think he is in there now but when he is cruising for the does in that bedding area, I will be high in one of those pine trees. He will be cruisin for a bruisin that morning. Knowing my luck he will get hit by a car before then though.

Don't take my advice but I have missed out on opportunities by waiting to hunt an area. Some other yahoo went in and screwed it up. Now if I see bucks using a certain area I hunt it now! You know they are using it now, they may not in the future. Why wait? I feel I have been to passive in the past and have gotten more aggressive with my hunting and being willing to change spots and it has paid off. There's truth here too, depending on if others are hunting the area , time may be of the essence. I've been fortunate to hunted areas where I dictated when I set up on a particular buck , not other hunters.
