I might potentially need a tracking dog in North AL just North if Huntsville. Just shot a decent 8 pt and I’m afraid I may have hit a little further back than I’d like. Any recommendations appreciated

If you hit him back, resist the urge to go after him until he has had a full 8 hours to die. 2, 4, or 6 hours is NOT enough on a gut shot deer with a bow. He won't go far at all until he lays down. Just be patient, slip out quietly in the opposite direction, and the odds are really good you won't need a tracking dog. Good luck!

Thanks I appreciate it. I’ll definitely be patient, he ran about 10-15 and fell or laid down. It’s thick so I couldn’t tell which. I could see hit rack only after he ran off. I haven’t moved from my stand. I can still see his rack, hasn’t passed yet cause I saw him move his head about 5 mins ago

Yep, you should wait. If you can see him, you might have to a tough time getting down and backing out for the rest of the day without bumping him into the next county. That is classic gut shot behavior. He will die but it will likely take all day. If you bump him, he will probably go a long way and leave very little if any sign to follow. Your best bet is to stay put but I know I couldn't sit that long. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I plan to sit as long as I can. It’s really think where he fell/laid down at. I’m hunting just inside a tree line so may try and sneak out around 12 or so then come back later to look. Made the shot just after 9

If you can still see him, don’t move till he’s for sure dead, then wait another hour to make him deader. If Tom Munoz is still tracking, he should be close to you. I’m not sure if bowtarist is tracking or not, but if you end up needing a dog, I can give you Tom or bowtarists phone numbers. PM me your cell number

Solid advice. Sounds like a great deer.

Appreciate the advice guys. I sent you a PM foldemup. Hopefully I won’t need one. I can’t currently see him anymore at the moment, suns poking through and shining bright in some spots. Hopefully he will be dead and won’t need the dog. Last thing I’d ever want to do is wound one so I plan to sit and just wait for now.
