I would think that was a recent wound. Otherwise I think infection wouldve killed that deer

They’re amazingly resilient to infection. I’ve seen deer recover from far worse wounds that you would think infection would have eventually killed. That’s not too bad. That deer should be fine.

It does appear she has some additional lacerations in the front of the shoulder.

Why couldn’t you just be normal and say “looks like she has some more cuts on her shoulder”?

Always interesting to see wildlife and how they cope. That's down to the bone. Humans would be down for weeks with that. Deer can beat that and the infections too. What did it is anybody's guess.

barbed wire would be my guess. I've seen running deer miss the jump over a barbed wire fence and get snagged like that.

THAT wound will not kill that deer, I've seen em survive much, much worse.

Even from the "8 Aug" picture to the "12 Aug" picture, the wound already looks much better. That deer will be fine.

fifteen years ago when I was still doing fawn rehab I received a fawn from near Greystone that we namer Gator because it looked like a BIG gator bit his chest. He had a huge hole, damage to sternum, and rib ends. I was sure he wouldn't make it. I did give him antibiotics and wound care and damn if he didn't make it. Always had a funny line to his chest where the hole was, like a 2" depression. Some of em you couldn't kill with an eighteen wheeler and some just die for no reason it seems.
