I bought a used climber from a member here and the hose covering the cable needs replaced (though I’ve seen a lot of climbers going to nylon wrapped cable instead of hose). I went ahead and cut the hose off and the cables are absolutely fine, in great shape. Since these cables have feruled on the ends I don’t see being able to get the hose on without cutting the hose. If I go with the hose cut method I suppose I could seal the hose back up once it’s on the cable with a number of different things.

Have any of y’all done this? What worked for you? Feel free to recommend other options as well. Thanks.

Cougar claw. I don’t know the model but it’s a hand climber style. The ferule has a cube shape with a hole in it for the pin. I’d leave the cable bare if I wasn’t worried about fraying from the metal to metal contact.

I redid my summit cables with heat shrink tubing. It was very easy to do.

How have they held up? What’s the thickness of the shrink wrap? Where did you purchase?

If you will file the inside edge of the square tubing the cable slides into on the summit stands it won’t tear the cables up as fast.

Good thought and easy enough. Yea I’ll throw a radius on those for sure.

Perchjerker had listed a few years ago how to go about recovering your cables. It should be on here somewhere. He said to use clear tubing from stores like Home Depot or Lowes. Not sure the exact size but I did it and it was easy peasy. Has held up for a couple years too.

I’ll get to searching for it, thanks

I now consider myself a borderline shrink wrap for summit stands expert. I'm pasting my post from another thread here for you. You have a different stand, but hopefully this helps. Also, Harbor Freight has a cheap heat shrink gun and has a few sizes of tubing.

I just replaced the cables wrapping on both of my summits and a buddies summit as well. I kinda thought it was crazy to pay so much for the "Summit" shrink tube. Looked all over the place to find the specifics on the shrink tube to order, but didn't have much luck. Ended up ordering two sizes off eBay with free shipping. Neither worked and I had to send both back. They were 2:1 shrink ratio and sizes 5/8" (16mm) and 9/16" (14mm). They wouldn't shrink down tight enough on the cable parts. Anything smaller in diameter wouldn't have fit over the knobs.

So then I started looking at a more aggressive shrink ratio. In a 3:1 shrink ratio, the 5/8" would have been ideal but I couldn't find that size, so I ordered the 3/4". They worked perfectly.

I ended up getting enough tubing to do 10 cables (or 5 stands) for $35. This would have cost roughly $90 (plus shipping) if I had ordered the Summit specific shrink tubing.

Also, while the tubing was off, I painted the cables to help keep them protected once this tubing starts to break and crack.

Could you use stainless cable in place of the old cable? Seems this would be better for corrosion.

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

The cables are stainless and in great shape. The air hose cover is what takes the beating after years.

That’s weird. It is an old link, maybe aldeer has purged their stuff since then. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
