After have the worst yield in 30 yrs of farming rice we decided it’s time to throw in the towel. It’s been a good run but it’s starting to get into the savings pretty hard. The numbers just aren’t working and while the equipment is still worth a little something we made the decision to quit while we are in decent shape. It’s been a fun ride but I can read the writing on the wall and it’s time to move on. I have 10 yrs left with the Sheriffs office and then I can retire there and my wife will have been retired for a year and then we will start traveling. For now I may enlarge my garden and try to sell a few veggies. Maybe.

Sorry to hear this. I’m afraid there’s going to many operations going this route this year. We sat and scratched numbers for 2020 crop this Am and nothing pencils out right now. Good luck in your future endeavors. Gotta be a sad day the day you decide this.

Let fuel go back through the roof and a lot of folks will be hanging it up. Farming and logging. But it’s okay some of the not smart ones that works offshore will be living it up. And no that is not a blanket statement of all people that work offshore. Some are actually smart with their money

I pray God blesses your socks off with the next opportunity. It's tough facing those kind of decisions when so much of your time and money is invested. The logging industry where I live is taking a beating. More and more businesses are closing down.

we had a good run with peanuts in the 70's & 80's in the wiregrass, but eventually had to hang it up ...

A wise man once said that every so often a person should take stock of their location and their occupation.
And make an honest assessment of whether change should be made in either.

Sounds like you have done that.

Good luck sir.

WM Hunter that quote makes me feel better also! Ive just sold my business that I just paid off the loans on that I took out to buy it. Having to move from our beautiful 4 acre spread outside of auburn to the hell hole of Orlando. At some point you gotta be a man and not do what’s best for me and do what’s best for my family and future.

No worries guys. We’ve been thinking about shutting her down for the last couple years. We’re gonna be alright. Y’all know what I just thought of? All this rice farming stuff won’t be getting in the way of turkey hunting no more. rofl
But seriously, I been ready to stop. That fire and fun went out about 10yrs ago. One thing about ole Mud, he will do what it takes to keep the family happy and this is a small step in that direction. I work 7 and 7 with the S.O. so I’ll have lots of time on my hands to find a side gig. I’m still a young chap (50yrs old tomorrow) and can still help some buddies with their tractor work and run other equipment for them. Got my portable welding rig and gonna keep the mini excavator and do little jobs with it. There’s a whole world of opportunities around here. And also the grass at the camp needs to be cut a lot and I think I can be the man for that job too. rofl

Farm economics are depressing. I’m glad you are getting out by your own choice, but hate that economics forced the decision.
