Okay so I have a spot that I can not get a truck/4wheeler/tractor to at all. I walk along ways the the back side of the property to get to it. I would love to be able to put a field there, nothing fancy and may only be a one time thing.. There’s an area that is pretty big that has sage grass growing in it like a long lane, that’s where I’m gonna try to plant... I’m just trying to get some tips or ideas to help capitalize on this And not be a total bust

My idea is me and a buddy go weed eat the area down then wait a couple of weeks for when I know it’s gonna have a good rain and just spread some seed and fertilizer and see what happens... (I just guessing it works the same as the sides of the road where they cover the ground with hay and plant and that seems to work every time...)

I agree with crenshawco.... I say spread whatever seed you want and weed eat that stuff down ahead of a big rain. Throw and mow has really changed the game on some plots for me

cut down as many trees as you need to get some light to it. Weed eat it and sow some seeds. Cereal Rye and Crimson clover will grow anywhere. I know folks bad mouth it, but I've killed a bunch of deer munching on Rye GRASS and that stuff is great for backwoods plots.

Just a thought, but I think I might spread the seed first. Then, weed eat it. The dead grass laying on top of seeds would act as a mulch to keep it moist and help with quicker germination . It would also help hide the buffet of seed from birds.

He can’t even get a tractor to it. So using a tractor is not an option. I’d favor spraying a few weeks ahead of planting too. Backpack sprayer.

Thanks guys!!! I believe that’s what I’m gonna do... about the first of October I’m gonna watch the weather. I’m gonna go in there when I see it’s suppose to be a good rain in the next day or so. Put out the seed and fertilizer, and weed eat as much as I can to cover it. And seee what happens.. I’m gonna plant rye grass with buck forage oats.

I would plant cereal rye, which is a grain like oats and wheat, not rye grass. Deer preference is higher.

I could show you lots of pics from close acquaintances that dispel your theory. Mature bucks feeding in the daylight during hunting season less than an hour after the food source is replenished. It’s all in the amount of pressure you put on the animals while hunting them.

Ok maybe cereal rye??? I’m up for anything, tell me some other options that should do good... I’m pretty set on the buck forage oats, but will try anything with it. I just seen someone saying rye grass will grow anywhere, and was thinking maybe that’s a plus for what I am trying...

It may just be a one time thing, unless it works real well and I have a decent season at the club. I’m really just hoping this will work... because it will be a great area for it, there’s not another good field too close.. it should pull a good amount of deer

No, no, no, don't go to all that trouble and then plant ryegrass. Oats, wheat or RYE are a much better option. Ryegrass is ok but not preferred by deer and it will eventually dominate and choke everything else out

I like BFO's, but the price got up there high and they are hard to find. I started planting nothing but Coker oats a couple of years ago and the deer like them fine.
