I'd do some real soil tests, most meters are highly innacurate. 5.8 can be improved but you can grow nice food plots in it. Do some accurate tests to establish a baseline and go from there. If it's prairie soil I'd expect the ph to be higher than that, it can be from mid 6 to 8+ X2. $7 soil test is worth every penny considering the accuracy needed.

Lime ain’t gonna do anything anytime soon so you aren’t late yet. It should be a turnaround of less then a week.

Thanks for the input guys. I definetly plan to have tested, but as I said I just acquired it. How long a turn around time is it usually when you send it off? Just trying to get an idea being it is so close to planting time. The last few time I’ve sent mine off to Auburn, they emailed results in about three days.

Your ph is not that bad. If it were me, I wouldn't put out any lime and see how you like the place. It's your first year and you may not be there but one year. Like mentioned go to extension service and get sample kits. Hit it right after the season if you keep it.

It starts working immediately, it takes 5-6 months for the ph to raise all that its gunna raise. This!!!! The best time to lime is always, NOW!! It doesn't just NOT WORK and then in six to nine months, start working. It's a gradual thing but if you need lime, I would NOT wait! Soil pH is the most important thing you can pay attention to. If you can't afford both lime and fertilizer... then don't buy the fertilizer and spend your money on lime!!! Get you pH right!!
