Remington 870 12ga, 26" barrell, and a jellyhead choke I beleive. It was the first bird, and the last bird I have killed. I need to remedy that next season!

My "first" turkey kill probably deserves a story more so than a description of the weapon used. I was 12 and riding in the back of a pickup with a group of men that my Grandma was taking home. 5 or so black gentlemen with my Grandma and brother in the cab. When Grandma needed work done, we were the very model for integration. She worked all of us hard and paid all of us poorly.

Grandma drove fast, so it paid to hold on. Luckily my Dad had installed wooden slats so we could fill the bed of the truck full all the way to the top of the cab. The slats made it feel safer. A 64 Ford with 3 on the tree and dimmer in the floorboard. They do not make anything like the vehicles of that era. It was old even then but she wouldn't use the "good truck" for chores. The F-150 stayed parked at her house except for social trips.

Because I was the youngest, they gave me the best seat in the bed of the pickup. Standing behind the cab so I could see where we were going. I will never forget the sight as we rounded the curve with Grandma getting all the speed that 64 Ford had. Turkeys erupted like a covey of quail. The clutch applied and brakes squealed. One turkey parted my hair as it flew over. Was a near mis then the "THUMP". As Grandma rolled to a stop a flopping shape was erupting feathers. The bed emptied and the older fellas retrieved it.

All was well until the turkey popped open its eyes and stood up. Those guys had been talking about turkey dinner since the "accident". Did not take them long to subdue the bird and I dispatched it with my Case XX trapper.

So my first turkey fell to a 64 Ford pickup truck and a Case XX trapper knife..

Remington 870 super magnum with 3.5” lead 5s. I was 16 so it would have been on 2000. I skipped school to go.
