In yalls opinion, what is the best location for a shooting house on a food plot? My only thing is not to have it facing West where the sun will blast you in the face all afternoon. Other than that, any recommendations or reasons behind certain locations?

Wind direction and ease of access should be considered.

id set up on the south -south eastern end of the field since most of our winter wind comes out of the north or north west

Put is as far off the field as possible, while allowing easy access without disturbing deer in the field if possible.

Best days are usually cool, high pressure days after a cold front passes. Wind is almost always nw.
It's also very important to be able to approach and leave a stand without spooking deer in a field or nearby

If this is an established field you probably already have a good idea where the deer primarily enter the field, keep that in mind when trying to find a place for the stand. You need to be able to get to and from the stand without disturbing the deer in the field but just as importantly without disturbing the deer that are coming to the field. Make sure you can see all or most of the field from where you want to place the stand. An added plus is if you can see beyond the field where the deer seem to come from the most.

Then obviously think about the prevailing wind direction. If I have a location that allows me to see everything like I want and also provides good access to and from the stand without spooking deer (in the field or in the woods) then that is were I place it even if its means I can only hunt that stand with a due East wind.

As far away from the field as you can put it and still make the required shot.

I used to like this option but it sure makes it difficult to identify deer right at dark. I like mine 25yds off the field at the most. Also it depends on where the deer bed and where they enter the field from. I used to buy the southeast corner of a field theory as well but seems now days south and east winds are just as common as north or west. However most deer we kill are during cold front conditions with high winds and those typically come from the N or W so S or E side stands are the most productive for those days.

A lot of truth here. My best property is a long (East to West) and narrow 100 acre piece that has all open fields to the North and all deer approach from the South or East. It is extremely difficult to hunt and placing stands on the South side of a plot is not an option there. I probably should give up on this property but the game cameras show too many shooters there to give it up. I guess they get big when the advantage is so strongly in their favor.

Build the house as air tight as possible and leave the windows closed until you are ready to shoot.

X2. We have a new house that’s air tight. You can hunt it in any wind and it’s right on top of the field. You just gotta get there early. The downside, if it’s a warm day that house will be a hot mofo.

About 50 yards from the corn pile, down wind of course. With the heater on in it, leave the windows closed until you’ve picked the biggest slick head out you wanna shoot.

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

This^^^^^^, if the plot is down wind , shut the windows. Be more concerned about ingress and egress and not being silhouetted by the sun.

In some cases a shooting house is not the best option, especially if the placement is where the deer come up from behind the stand, the field is not secluded enough, or the deer bed in the wrong location. In that case a small plot may be better suited to hunt near their travel route. May be best to use stands first until it is determined which place is best. It just is frustrating when the house is built and you find out it is in the wrong location or there is no good location for that area.

Where the deer generally enter the field and wind direction.

If you think deer don't get edumacated about shooting houses throughout the year, you're wrong. I've seen it... a deer steps to the edge of a food plot and stops and stares at the shooting house. If the hunter is young or careless or doesn't see the deer and the hunter moves to adjust his/her hat, the hunt is over.

Set the SH on the SE side of the food plot (but ya have to have some SH's to hunt on a S, SE, NE or E wind) and try like hell to leave the SH undetected!!! So many hunters start shinning their flashlights out in the food plot to see deer.

Enter and leave the SH without the deer knowing you're there. Closed and airtight SH's are great!!!
