What gun did you kill your first deer with and what's the story on how it happened?

20 ga slug out of a double barrel 20. I came, I saw, I shot.

Bow hunted a little when young with no success. Got back into hunting around 2013. Shot my first deer December 31, 2014. Extra nice in that it was on family land. My son got his first a couple years ago in the same field. Ruger American in both cases. .308 for me and 7mm-08 for him (compact).

Model 7 243. Buttonhead. I was 8 hrs old.

410 with slug. Running dogs in Rabun Alabama in the early 70's.

A 16 gauge Winchester model 12 shooting #1 buckshot.

We were running dogs and jumped a decent little buck. Another fella missed him 5 times and we cut him on the next crossing. He had probably 10 head of high strong walkers on him and he just stepped out in the old logging road and stopped. I guess it was meant to be. I shot one time and hit him pretty good. He ran about 50-60 yards and piled up.

That day solidified a love of running dogs I still have to this day.

H&R 16 ga single shot made in 1939. A couple of uncles had killed their first with it as well. Mine was a spike in 1975 on December 22 ahead of two walker hounds (Donna and Dixie) off of Old Scotland Road on a trim road we called the Tank Road. The stand was called the Mule Lot. Still have the little set of spikes.

Yea, it does. Our group hunted down George Thomley Road. We hunted around Majors Creek, Steele Creek, School house Branch and Richard Eady’s gravel Pit if any of those areas rings a bell too ya? When Rabun Sportsman Club formed back in the Mid 1980’s some of the land we hunted bordered there club. Where was the area Ya’s group hunted in Rabun?

Head shot on a doe with a Remington 7600 .270 WIN. Had the old Kwik Site see thru mounts. She was about 25 yards away and I used the iron sights.

Bar 270. 9 yr old. Off hwy 69 between moundville and Greensboro.

NEF 270 single shot. 4 pt, 15-20 yard shot, 2nd year we had 3 doe days right after Christmas in Madison County. I never noticed if it had horns or not. I could hear him walking and as he came around the corner of a pine thicket, boom. Seemed like he ran 6 miles back through that 20 acre pine thicket, I reality he ran about 120 yards.

Marlin .357 lever action with iron sights. Doe at about 60yds, 6 years old. Got a .243 model 7 the next year and killed about 40 deer with it in the next few years.

Ruger M77 tang safety 7X57. Handloads with Hornady 139 gr SP. 100 lb spike at about 60 yards, quartered towards me. Put bullet just inside shoulder and punched his heart. He whirled and ran about 30 yards. Thanksgiving weekend, 1983.

Thanksgiving day, 1997, Remington model 7 .243 I was 12 years old, “the year before my GF was born” lmao.

I was about a mile from Pilgrims Rest Church beside Choccolocca WMA, the rut was wide open in Cleburne county. Dad had set me on a big rock watching a hardwood bottom between two cut overs, it was a natural funnel. He came out with 6 does, walked in front of me about 100 yards, stopped broadsided, I let him have it, he flopped down, and just kept thrashing around. I jumped up, and hollered for dad, he was about 100 yards down the holler from me. He came up to me, I told him it was a buck at least a 6 point and I fell slam in the creek in the process of gettin to him. We walked up to him and his head raised up, dad shouldered his rifle and seen I’d clipped his back, told me to shoot him again, we was like 30 feet from him, and I missed!! Lmao So I took his Buck 110 and walked up behind him and jugged him behind the shoulder. Lights out then. 10 point with a 19 3/4 inch inside spread. Little did I know when we took him to the Processer that’s the last time we would see him. The place got broken into and he was stole along with 6 other racks, I still look for that deer anytime I see a mount in public. But i got pics and memories, won’t ever forget it and I still hunt with that rifle to this day, actually re done the stock last year.

12ga slug from an 870. It was a spike and turned out I shot a chunk out of a sapling that was in front of him in the process.

Winchester Model 1200 with #1 Buckshot. It was 1977 drive hunting with dogs close to Plantersville, AL. Seven point came walking in from behind; headed into the drive with people and dogs making all sorts of racket. It was my time and his. I can still see him in the morning sun like it was yesterday.

You remember the swimming hole on Majors creek called the Zero Hole? Used to run dogs in the woods across that bridge. And further up the road, before 59, my Mom's family had some land too. Mom is a Hadley.

1994, a doe and bobcat in the same day, was 7 years old. Shot them in Michigan on my uncles property. Used my dads Remington woods master in 30-06.

Killed my first deer in 1968 ( weren't many around back then, at least not where I hunted). Killed a 7 point with a 12 gauge SXS double barrel using 00 buckshot on a dog drive. Looking back, it rolled up after the first shot and I'm now sure it was dead, but I shot it again anyway cause it was wiggling a little bit and I was REAL excited. Would have probably shot it a third time but I only had 2 shells !

Kilt my first with a .270 when I was 13. It was the first deer I had ever seen while hunting, and I had hunted 6 years before seeing that one. He stepped out into a field head-on and I didn't even wait for him to get broadside. I threw the gun up and shot him right through the chest and the bullet exited out one of his butt cheeks. He dropped like a stack of bricks. He was a fun one to clean as you can imagine.

1917 Enfield bolt action 30-06 converted to a sporter by my dad. I was hunting on Barbour WMA in 1985. I had gone back to the woods early and climbed my chosen tree with a Baker climbing stand, settled in and dozed off. A limb snapped behind me to my right and woke me up. I slowly eased my head around to see a buck walking towards me at 20 yards. The deer walked past my tree at 5 yards and was browsing on stuff as he moved along. I shouldered the old bolt action and dropped him at 15 yards. He was a 7 point, my first deer. I field dressed him and drug him back to my truck 100 yards or so. I managed to load him by myself, and took him to the check station. He was 123 pounds field dressed. Not a bad deer for Barbour WMA back in that day.

Hunting a powerline on bogue chitto creek. Had a group of young bucks come out right at dark. Shot the biggest one. Broke his back the first shot. Unloaded the rifle on him after that. 7mm-08. 13pt that had tines coming out of everywhere. Just a 1.5 year old deer but I was tickled. I was 11.

Remington 870 - 20 ga - #3 buckshot

30-30 Marlin. High school girlfriend's dad just gave it to me. Wish I had hung on to it but had to sell it during hard times in college.

Back then doe days opened up the day after Christmas. I got a new ladder stand for Christmas so me and my younger brother went to some land in Elmore county that was owned by my dad's boss. It was up around Real Island and I could hear boats and sometimes folks talking down toward the lake. I put up my stand and got in it. Loaded my rifle and waited. Safety belt? I don't need no stinking safety belt! I think this was 1984.

About 4pm I saw a deer moving on my right side so I turned around to face him. I thought it was a doe but when I moved, I saw he had about 3" spikes. I didn't care. I'd never killed a deer and never even seen a buck before while hunting. So I pulled up to shoot and he moved. I hit him a little back. He took off running behind me and I started working that lever like The Rifleman! I shot again and he ran behind me then came around me on my left side so I turned around facing the other way. He ran down right by me and I shot the gun til it was empty. I was hitting and missing!

Poor deer finally laid down about 70 yards away head up and facing directly away from me. He was looking around so I loaded my last bullet and aimed at the middle of his back and fired. That did him in. I was so proud as if I'd shot a 10 point! I gutted him and me and my brother dragged him out to the road. I loaded him into the back of my Honda Civic and went on home! I shot about 7 times hitting him 3 of those including the final shot. I often wondered what those folks in those houses at Real Island thought when let loose a few hundred yards behind them with that that 30-30 that day.

Yea, We used to swim over at Majors Creek a good bit when I was a kid. We hunted about 2 or 3 miles to the NE of Ya as a crow flies. Ya hunt around Aaron Hadley Road? There was always a Real Good Deer Population around Henry Bryars Property off of Aaron Hadley Road.

I would love to have that one back. It was stolen in '98 when mom and dads house was broken into. I still look for it in every pawn shop or gun store I go in. Speaking of that, if anyone has or sees a model 12 16 gauge with a solid rib on the barrel and the serial # 757546, I'd sure like to have it back. I bought another one, but it's not the same.

I've got two Winchester model 12's: a standard 12 gauge and a 3" magnum 12 gauge with deluxe wood. Best pump shotgun ever made!!!!

I agree and have a few. A rough one I brought back from the dead with a modified barrel and one almost like I had stolen with a full choke barrel (both in 16 gauge). I also have 2 3" 12 gauge model 12s. Those are very well built, but will make you poor to tote 'em.

Did you hit the doe with one 000 pellet behind the ear?

1995 Chambers county .308 huge fat nanny goat. After 3 years of hunting public land in South Florida and not killing one, I headed north to beautiful Alabama and Rockfence Station. After several days of not seeing anything, I finally got it done. I remember getting lost in the morning dark and getting destroyed by briars walking in plus I got my feet wet crossing an unexpected creek. When I finally found the flagging and the stand, I was wet and it was light. I was all upset as it became light and figured I'd never kill a deer. Nothing was coming with the noise I made. After about 20 minutes her comes 3 does and one was huge. Never seen a doe that big since. She was within 25 yards and I put the scope on her neck and dropped her in her tracks. One of the happiest days of my life.

13 yrs old, doe, International Paper Land, Hardeman County, TN, Remington 700ML .50cal out of a Tree Lounge. I had saved up and bought them with my own money. I still have both of them.

I grew up hunting in the big woods of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, big deer when you find them but not plentiful and hard to hunt so I didnt kill my first deer till later in life when I moved down here. first deer was a "management" hunt on a local property, killed a small 5 point with a Tenpoint Titan crossbow. First gun deer was with 30-06 Savage 110, first muzzleloader deer was with Knight DISC 45 cal.

Many years later, had it stolen from my truck while I was catching a few winks before getting up to go look for a deer I had shot at last light but had no flashlight of any kind. Found the deer laying in the road a few yards from where I gave up the evening before. Two years after it was stolen, the Pcola police call to say they arrested a guy with it and to come get it. I call the insurance company and tell them it is their gun since they paid my claim on it. Five years later, the Pcola police tell me to come get it because insurance company never fooled with it. That year I killed my biggest Florida buck to date with it....11 pt.

I will never forget those awesome memories!

1976 at Wendells Lodge in Aliceville, AL. A man my father worked with at Ford Motor Company invited me down to hunt with him. I had just turned 16 and was excited. We hunted in a drizzle for two days and on the second evening the dogs ran a spike right to me. I emptied my 20 ga Browning automatic and then loaded two more buckshot in it and shot them also. He was a world record in my eyes, but probably didn't weigh a hundred pounds. Thanks Thomas Overton for one of the best memories of my life.
