Some of these numbers are astonishing....I grew up in Walker County and still own property there. It saddens me to see people I know well that have fallen under this scourge. I know folks choose to use drugs but their families and loved ones didn't. I have seen people struggle to overcome the demons but ultimately lose the desire to continue the fight or fall victim to the deadly drugs combinations.
Lack of jobs or jobs paying well enough to get above poverty, easy access to prescrition meds, government benefits, prisons making money off prisoners. Too many hands in the pot to stop it.
It is easier to fool a man than to convince him he has been fooled.
If you want to see some real rampant drug use make your way up to Kentucky. We've pills and baggies and syringes in our parking lots.
I believe the show was actually based over in West Virginia but same same pretty much.
It's all the same. The Midwest and northeast have been decimated by loss of manufacturing and mining. The barrier for entry into the middle class has gotten increasingly higher with fewer guarantees of getting there. Lot of people can't or aren't willing to adapt or relocate, so they work odd jobs, get on government assistance, and do pills to feel something.

I’ve been a nurse for 15 years. Been in the healthcare field for 20...I totally believe American healthcare from the prescription companies down to the doctors are to blame for the current prescription abuse problem we have. A lot (not all) MDs thinks it’s just easier to write someone a prescription than argue with them about opiates and get them out of their office. We have become such a service pleasing occupation that they get “bad reviews” if they don’t write them their addictive prescription for the month. It’s gotten way outta hand.

While I agree with this to an extent......Put yourself in the shoes of the prescriber. Most doctors do not work for themselves. Governmental red tape, insurance companies, along with corporate entities have made it nearly impossible to go into practice for yourself. Now the bulk of physicians are owned by some type of asset management, hospital, or corporation. If your boss is on your ass about documenting insulin injections in triplicate.......then you do it. Same for making customers happy.
The government is the root of the problem. Reimbursement is based off of patient satisfaction. Being a nurse, you know that sick people don't come to the hospital to rest, you come to the hospital to get better. Healthcare by and large (not all of it) should NOT be customer oriented, however everything is being based off of customer satisfaction. Because companies are running hospitals like a Starbucks, you have a physicians that answer to a suit that tells them how to practice. It happens everyday. I had a CEO tell an ER physician that he would give a patient a steroid injection (patient was a poorly controlled diabetic) because the patient was on the board and that's what he wanted.
My wife and I both are NP's. Fortunately I don't deal with chronic diseases at all, but she does. She also works for a large for profit and they deal with google reviews all the time. All of her bad reviews are from drug seekers. It's a catch 22, but after a while you get a piss on it attitude. I got to eat, if you want to kill yourself....then go to it.

I understand this as well. I work in behavioral health. Most of my patients are in the hospital against their will. Good luck getting good reviews.

While I agree with you...I think it’s also the physicians right and license to write prescriptions as he/she sees fit. That could be bad or good. It shouldn’t be based on make em happy attitude. But you are right in the regard if you don’t make them happy they won’t come back. I still think it boils down to the provider. Should you do what’s right or what makes people happy? Just saying. We as healthcare providers had a LARGE hand in this. We pass out narcotics like it’s candy. Fortunately in the ED setting we are becoming stingy with our drugs and are starting to use alternatives.
Many will say weed is the devils lettuce, I would much rather have someone craving Taco Bell and singing Bob Marley than messed up and kicking in doors for their next high.
I'd like to see the #'s of the folks that are abusing opioids, that actually ever had a prescription for them, compared to those that did not. I'd be willing to bet the ones that never had a prescription outnumber those that did in many areas.

A lot of them START with a prescription. It only takes DAYS to get addicted to opiates. A toothache, a minor surgery, etc...
Then they go buy them from the streets.
Once they can’t get pills they result to heroin.
In the state of California if you get more than a certain number of pills on a prescription an MD is REQUIRED to write a RX for Narcan. Working on the west coast I see a large population of IV drug addiction. Most of them are manipulative buttholes now but I bet they weren’t like that before the drugs.
Thats why I am reevaluating the practicality of the Liberal/Socialist agenda. It could literally quicken the collapse of society and the extinction of undesirables and immorality.
Nothing better than getting up in the morning, Thanking God for it, spending all day everyday with family fishing, hunting, gathering, and growing for one’s survival.
Lets face it, mostly lazy immoral undesirables are having abortions Those without the willpower to resist substance abuse will eventually kick off Overcrowded areas will die of disease Thugs will be killed by redneks
Whatever makes this happen, I’m all for.
I say this about the hedonistic immoral culture from a radical Christian standpoint...”Too much of a good thing could be a good thing”
So this is why ole Phil Robertson vets his kin folk and makes sure they have some human skills.
Here is one for ya. Took mom to Dr. gave her a script said it would be 40 for whole bottle. OK took it to CVS went to pick it up they said 1000 for bottle but 800 with insurance. I asked several time if that was generic they said yes. I called Dr. nurses were great and said let us call. They called me back and said with the RX app I could get it for 300 at CVS or for 19.99 at Kroger with the RX coupon. So CVS was going to make a killing off mom. Plus they were going to screw the insurance company.
Just watched a program on opioid addiction, it stated 80% of herion addicts started out on prescription opioids.
Heroin dealers get jail time big pharma sales reps that make their goals get bonuses and go to the annual presidents club convention. It’s about the evil man inflicts upon his brother for money. Get people hooked on this chit then wreck their lives until they no longer can get a script from a Dr. Then arrest them for self medicating with street drugs. That is if they don’t die before the Doctors, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies get every available dime out of them or their insurance company. OxyContin Vicodin etc should be banned and the prescribing physicians along with the pharma co’s fined into nonexistence. It’s a flipping manufactured plague.

I ran into a guy I worked with for 25 years the other day. He didn't even recognize me. After that he went in another store and they called a mutual friend to help him after he pissed himself and didn't even know it. He used to go to the same Dr. I go to, but apparently didn't get the treatment he wanted so he found one that would give him all he wanted I guess.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.
A bunch i grew up with got on pills then after years of it they turned to meth. Totally different people. Lost everything they had. I see them walking the streets sometimes. Its crazy. They had skilled trades too and were top notch.
Look at Doc's face when you say " I don't want Opiods I just want the pain to stop" They are shocked because most everyone asks for opiods. That is what I am dealing with right now from the bulging disk in my neck. Every Doc I see gets weird when I say I do not want addictive drugs, I just want the pain to stop.
