How do you determine that a gun like that would be safe to shoot again? I'd think an xray or something like that would be in order.

Yeah, with a Taurus I'm not sure I'd go to the trouble to try to salvage it in usable condition.

158gr jacketed lead flat nose bullet sitting on top of 2.4gr of Trail Boss powder.

Per Hodgdon the starting load is 2.7gr for. 158 LSWC.
