How old is the grandson? When I was 16 my dad gave me a 20 year old truck. He said that was the only one I would ever get for free. My next one would be on my dime. I got a '71 Volkswagen Beetle with basically the same story... I saved my money from my construction job and bought a '66 Mustang fastback for $600, and never looked back. Of course now I'm big time I have a 2001 Ford Ranger 4x4 that I paid a whopping $4000 for. It even has a remote key fob that actually unlocks the doors. I think it's the first vehicle I've ever owned that automatically unlocks the doors for me.

he pays everything in cash and has no debt. . My advice is continuing that practice, even with trucks. I sure wish I had been smart enough, at 24, to do that. Thats the way i roll too. I only have a house payment.

I just bought a 2018 F150 xlt 4x4 screw with 3,100 miles with the 3.5L ecoboost way cheaper than that. This is the second ecoboost I've owned it'll flat out pull. I've had just about every engine Ford has put in a truck and the eco engine exceeds the power of them imo. It has no hesitation when you need to get on it like some V8. All in all I would most definitely go with the 3.5L eco. As far as the lariats they are nice but why does a kid need all that other than wanting to be cool. I'm way past that I've got a really nice truck for way less. Google and compare the 3.5L ecoboost vs 5.0 you will be surprised with the results. I've never had a moment's trouble with the ecoboost. How many miles have you put on an ecobbost? That is my concern, longevity out of that engine.

I told him last night he has got to get his credit number up. He is going to get a daily use credit card and pay it every month and I suggested finding a good, cheaper truck, maybe $20,000 or so and finance it, then after about a year his credit number should be higher and he can trade it and get the truck he wants. He doesn't want to co-sign. Yea one of them cheap $20k trucks lol

New car fever is a beotch Absolutely I agree with that. I catch myself sometimes looking at newer to me Avalons but mine I still owe a remaining $7,000 on mine and it goes down the road just fine. Glad I've got a stipend from my employer to pay for it. My debt, but I'm not the one really servicing it is how I think of it in my head at least.

Her is my advise for people about trucks and cars especially when they are young. Buy a vehicle you can pay cash for. Every month put aside the amount you would pay in car payments. Suck it up for 4-5 years and the walk in a dealership and pay cash for your next vehicle. Repeat. That way, you are never paying interest on a vehicle. It will save you money. It takes discipline and the first few years you have to drive an older vehicle. But, it is the smart thing to do. Best advice on this thread. To those who say its nuts to buy a new truck, someone has to buy them so you can buy a used one in 5-10 years. 😀

Blah blah blah. I’ll keep my money in the market and make 8 percent. I financed my truck for 2.9 percent. I buy new and drive them till they die. Stupid to use hard saved dollars when intrest is cheap. Y’all pay to much attention to Dave Ramsey.🤦♂️

To me its stupid to pay interest. And to pay those rates, car payments and full coverage on a vehicle that will be junk in not much time. This is a good example of why things cost so much. Cause folks just want a payment and dont have the cash to buy it and are willing to make a bad decision. They dont care about how much they are gonna spend over time. All they care about is the monthly payment. I can fix my own cars myself. If i couldnt fix my stuff myself and had to pay a shop...then i might take that road. The best decision i ever made was to learn automotive work.

The last two trucks I've bought, I've gotten 0% interest buying brand new, plus tons of rebates. I priced used before buying my current truck, and I bought brand new for $3000 more than what a 3 year old truck with 50K miles and no warranty would have cost me. I pay them off in 4 years or less, and drive them 10+ years.
