Going to buy a row planter and Covington is at the top of the list. Any reason to buy anything different? Anybody know of anything better?

I had Covington and sold 'em when I got my John Deere 71's. The only thing I miss about the Covington's was the fertilizer hopper. With the Covington I had to plant slower and refill the hopper more often. The Deere planters have a much larger hopper and can plant at higher speed than the Covington. The biggest downside to the 71's is it takes a lot of seed to prime the hopper so they may not be good for plots smaller than an acre.

But if Covington is what you want I don't think you can go wrong with 'em. They are very good plot planters and you can get parts for them with no problem.

don't get a cole. Can not see how much seed or fertilizer that is in the hopper.

I am drinking from my saucer cause my cup has overflowed. Thank you Lord

Technology for small 1,2,4 row planters is severely lacking.

The Covington works well but is approx. a 100 year old production concept. I have a one row and use it for wide row applications, melons.etc.

Seed prices have risen to the point that any wasted seed or fertilizer is cost prohibitive.

Tune 'em up good!

In my humble opinion the covington works great for gardens and small plots. I've used 1 for years. They have to be run slower than others.

biggest problem is applying nitrogen using a one row . spin spreader will burn corn back bad . lol

the set up i like best is a cole or powell planter that bolts to the cultivator . you can unbolt the plannter and plow with it . can't do that with the Covington one row i have now , i can only plant with it .

also , cole makes a nitrogen gravity drop spreader you can bolt to the cultivator thats works great . i have one .

You need a "Side-Dresser".

Well, here's my situation: I would like to plant ~ 5 acres of corn, and about 5 acres of sunflowers for a dove field. I think I could probably plant this in a few hours with a one row covington I would mount this to a cultivator and I actually have another cultivator for, well, cultivating. I think this may work...opinions?

will work fine !!!!

get this to go with it and your good to go

http://www.coleplanter.com/mcnifty.htm

you can bolt it to the other cultivator. might have to drill a hole , i did .

use a pea plate for the small sunflowers seeds , corn plate for the bigs ones

they are not hard to get , just high . but it's about the only way to apply nitrogen planting one row . i think mine was a litle over 300 dollars . it does work well and well built. you can get them at most places that sell planter plates or parts .

its spring loaded when you raise it it shuts off when you lower it it opens up . i have put out fertilizer with it then planted over it .

oh ,,, the tube bolts to the back side of the plow . as the plow spreads the dirt the nitrogin goes in the ground . you can adjust the plow to get it as close to the row as you want it
