LEO'S are under paid for what they have to deal with. I don't have the patience to do it. I appreciate those that do. I have friends and neighbors that are LEO's and they are good people.

Very dangerous. I volunteered. When you start you're gung ho until your colleagues start dying. Been to too many funerals for LEOs From a BSO sergeant being murdered, to various officers hit and killed by a car, to a fellow trooper burning alive in a patrol car. I've seen it all. I survived a patrol car crash and things I won't or can't talk about. You have to be alert all the time or you're potentially going to miss something that will get you killed. When you find that you're not 100% on all the time, it's time to get out. If you don't get killed or hurt on the road it might be in a training accident. I had a good friend get shot in a training accident. I'm proud to have served my community but I don't miss it. It aged me 10 years. I pray everyday for my friends that are still active. God bless all the LEOs out there. Thank you for what you do! flag

Potential for getting hurt or killed is part of the job, you and your family have to accept that going in but when it got to a point in this country that dying on the job wasn’t or shouldn’t be the biggest concern, that’s a problem

No way I’d let either of my sons be a cop if I could help it. Law enforcement is a profession that is absolutely critical to civilized communities and it’s getting harder for departments to recruit and retain officers. As hoggin said it’s not worth the risk and lifestyle to this generation.

I completely agree with you on this point and I was pretty damn good at it as well but I promise you that I know a whole helluva lot more about my point than the average bear

I know you do, man and thank you for the time you put into that profession. No one can fault you for getting out nor for the reason you did. I just took issue with your assessment that only flunkies or unskilled folks are doing it. Believe me, if my family member were to choose another career, and he has plenty to choose from, I'd be crying for joy. But, it's what they are called to do at this time in their life and I support 'em. Oh, and pray everyday like I never did before! thumbup

I never said only flunkies or the unskilled do it, I’ve got lots of friends that still do it that are great cops and most who do it are. I just said if they could make a living another way and yet they choose to be in law enforcement they made a foolish decision in my opinion

LEOs are well aware of both the legality of policing in today's world as well as the dangers that come from it. And yet they still put the badge on and take the oath to protect you and your family. Hell we risk our lives and our families well being for you. Not because we need the money.. we hardly make enough to make ends meet. If that makes me an idiot I'm guilty as charged. I could be doing several other things than what I am doing now, but this is where the good lord has brought me. I'm not going to even attempt to argue your opinion, but with your same mindset about how things are, I guess you should call those boys that stormed the beaches of Normandy idiots too. Walking into what seemed like certain death. I'll keep my opinion and remain silent. All we ask for is support.

Today if I had just graduated high school I would join the Air Force and become a security officer. While I serving I would go to college and get a criminal justice degree. Retire after twenty and then try to become a LEO with a federal agency. Then retire from there after twenty years of service. So at age sixty I would be retired from two government departments and not giving a damn about anything that didn’t pertain to me having a good time every day.

Thanks to y’all of you on here that have been or is currently a law enforcement officer. I appreciate your sacrifice.

We can all thank Obama for where we are for LEO today. He made it OK to resist arrest. He made it OK to call every cop a racist. Sure there were problems before, but he poured gas on the fire. I have the upmost respect for those who live very day to protect me. As for criminals....let’s just say they better be grateful I didn’t become a Judge.

I completely support law enforcement on every level and comparing Normandy to being a cop today is ridiculous, I’ve clearly said dying ain’t never been a concern of mine and I’ve allowed myself plenty of opportunity for death ( in fact I’ve been pronounced dead but the good Lord wasn’t ready for me for some reason), trust me.

I ain’t being condescending but I ain’t one to dial 911 for help nor will my family even when I was a cop I always said “when seconds count the police are only minutes away”

Y’all can take offense to what I’ve said and I guess anyone who truly fits my description should but let’s at least squeeze in a little reading comprehension so we’re on the same level about the offense you’re taking.

Hoggin you have not addressed the “calling” point. Bibb County has been/is blessed to have a core of veterans in our Sheriff dept that were called to serve their home community and have done it well inspite of being paid a fraction of their worth. If you feel called the equation changes very much like it did at Normandy

Two little problems with your scenario. First about the only federal LE agency that will hire with a BS degree and military is ICE. But when you get on with them, other agencies recruit from ICE at the academy so it can be done. The other problem is that federal LE has a mandatory retirement age of 55. In order to get their money's worth from someone with the training they put in, they have decided they have to get 20 years of service, at least. Therefore they don't hire anyone over 35 years old.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

It is a valid point, I feel service was definitely my calling, all I ever wanted to be from probably to young to understand why was a soldier. I did that until appeals on my second medical discharge ran out making it impossible to continue and then moved on to the next best thing, the war raging in the streets of Birmingham. But my family never signed up for the politics that came with the job. My wife at the time was very familiar with rides to UAB in a patrol car but no family should be prepared to see a loved one going to prison ( as previously mentioned watched it happen to a friend) for doing their job well or seeing the media make them out to be a blood thirsty racist monster because they answered the wrong call or ran into the wrong spoiled brat high on dope and familiar with preferential treatment. Just because I was willing to put on a badge and do my job every day didn’t mean I had the right to put the ones I loved in jeopardy

I moved on. I haven’t been shot, stabbed, run over, run under or had to sit with the feds and wait to see if they wanna believe me or some crackhead on some BS story since I quit. I make a lot more money, spend more time with my family and still provide a service everyday to people in need.

I’m sure small town policing is a lot different but the same risk is there, it just takes one call going to hell and somebody with a phone on go watching or the media to decide to play it up

13 years in law enforcement, got out to go offshore almost 22 years ago, when I was 35. I left it because I was tired of starving to death...well, living paycheck to paycheck, anyway...but it was a tough decision to not just change jobs, but my whole career path at 35 years old. Not one second of one day since then have I missed it.

Sheriff stopped by my house one day about 2 or 3 years after I went offshore and asked me to come to work for him. I told him "I'd be delighted...I make 60K a year (at the time), insurance costs me $45/month for my family (at the time), oh, and I only work 6 months of the year.

"He said "I can't beat that."

"Damn, you almost had me, too!"
