I’m building a new shooting house in the next week or two and am looking at making sliding windows by making a frame from 2x2 and cutting two tracks on top and bottom for 4 pieces of glass that I can slide to open. I was going to do plexiglass because I see most people use it and I figured it was cheaper. I went and looked at prices yesterday and was surprised that glass was cheaper than plexiglass. I would think glass would be better for the lack of scratching easily and yellowing. Am I missing something here or is glass the better option?

Any other ideas on how to make cheap sliding windows besides my 2x2 frame idea?

Water will freeze in the tracks and windows won't slide.

Check out deerviewwindows.com. I have bought 2 sets from them and think they are a good value. Less than $100 for 3 windows for a shooting house.

Ive seen deer view and it would cost over $100 just for one side of the shooting house. Looking for a budget option

I have windows in a shooting house just like what you are describing. Have not had a bit of trouble with them except fogging. Especially when you cut the heat on. I have noticed that the overlap dont fog. My advise to you would be let a foot or so overlap in the middle. On a cold humid morning when you cut the heat on, that will be the only foot you can see out of without wiping constantly. That will still leave you plenty of sliding room as well. You can window a whole 4x8 shooting house for about $70.00. Thats what a sheet of plexiglass costs at lowes. Also, I made my windows 12inches high and almost all the way across all four sides. If I had it to do over, id go about 8inches. I have not had any trouble with water freezing in the tracks.

Any reason to use plexiglass over glass, or vice versa? Glass priced cheaper at lowes when I looked at it.

You can drill through plexiglass, its quieter, dont break like glass. One con is it does scratch.if you decided to change to hinged window you can bolt hinges directly to plexiglass.

Started changing all of our plexi to normal glass. So far I like the glass better. Will put normally glass in the next ones I build.

go buy the pre cut plexiglass sections, get non squeak hinges and some foam adhesive seal, make a couple of dowels to hold windo tight and no air will come around it. i have about 25$ in each window doing that.

I hate plexi windows. They scratch and turn yellow.

Make them out of 2x2 material. If you have a table saw use it to cut a groove for the glass to sit in.

If you want better joints in your corners buy one of these.
https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kreg-K4L-Pocket-Hole-Jig/3013529

Its $99 but i found tons of other uses for it. I actually bought a smaller one that was like $30.00 but it didnt come with the holding jig and that makes everything so easy. Just make sure your groove is not in the path for the screws or you will bust the glass.

I also put a little dab of silicone in all 4 corners to keep glass from moving since my groove is a little larger than it has to be but it makes assembling much easier. T hinges are fine unless the window is wider than 24" In my 6 foot houses I use two 30" windows with piano hinges. Mine fold down and I use a standard window lock to keep them in place. I also make a drape out of window screen that I fold over and use an office stapler to make a loop that a 1/2" piece of conduit goes through. I attach the conduit with some conduit C clamps. The drapes are each about 12" wide so there are slits so I can get my rifle through without them moving. I also screw a piece of stall mat down to 2" to the bottom of the window frame for a gun rest. The mat lasts forever and will not rot, mildew or get stinky like carpet will.

Plexy is fine , just don't use a Windex type cleaner on it.

I got an idea from some buddies and I plan to try it on some houses this Summer: they used plexiglass and installed it in a frame/track of J-mold (vinyl siding). If the J-mold track is noisy, then apply moleskin to make it quiet

I've build many shooting houses and installed plexiglas in all of them usually have them flip up to open. Install a little latch to keep them open or closed. Killed many a deer with the window resting on me head. Never hunt with them open. Only open to shoot. Have at times hinged them on the side to swing open.

I actually spent just over $100 on my last order from deerview and their prices are still the same. Two 24x10 glass hinged windows ($24.75 each) for the sides and one 36x10 ($33.00) for the front and $24.15 freight for a total of $106.65 delivered to Dothan.

Make them where they fold up and down. No noise and much better than sliding

Deer view is the way to go. Air tight, quite, doesnt cloud up over time like plexi.

Here’s the cheapest way to put sliding windows in a shooting house. This is in the screened porch section at Home Depot. Put the track on the top and bottom of the window frame. Cut plexi to fit, flex it into place. We have NEVER had one freeze up. A little graphite lube in the track makes for quiet operation. They are not air tight but are plenty sufficient for keeping wind out and warmth in if you run a heater.

I have used regular house windows. If you dont know anyone in construction I have just stopped by and gotten windows they are removing from a house for free.
