I had a gunsmith mount a Meopta 6.5-20x50 in Talley rings on a Weatherby Vanguard 30-06. Rifle shot great but was 3 inches low at 100 yards and no adjustment to come up. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Never had a rifle I couldn’t zero at 100 yards and had hoped to be able to dial to 400 with this scope. Talley is sending me new rings to try, but I’m not sure that is the problem.

Sounds like a defective scope.

could be the mounts binding internals from tightness or torque,or some other alignment issues other than just a bad scope. have to check it all. If receiver is drilled off ,compensation can be had with Burris signature rings using offset inserts.

How good is your gunsmith? Were the rings lapped, aligned, and torqued with a torque wrench,or were they just installed?

Way too many possibilities of things that could be wrong.

Without being able to look at it no one here can say with any certainty what may be wrong.

You're best bet would be to take it back to the 'smith and let him figure it out... Assuming he knows what he's doing to start with.

Try different ammo too.

Only hits count.

To understand what you are saying, with all the adjustment in the scope, you maxed out the elevation and you are still 3 inches low? Do you have any MOA built into the base ? There should be plenty of elevation to get you zeroed, I will be interested to see if new rings make a difference.

Thats correct, it was 3 inches low at 100 yards with no elevation left on scope to come up. It is Talley rings no moa built into base. I know it is an option to get a 20 moa base but it is a Weatherby Vanguard hunting rifle I wanted to keep it simple. Also wanted to be able to dial with the scope. Taking it to the gunsmith now with new rings I will report back what he says.

Put a multi slot Weaver base and some Burris Signature Rings on it. It's just a better system with more adjustment all the way around and in every way.

Unless you had to move the scope way over to the left/right as well... it is highly unlikely that the barrel is crooked.

Either the scope of the mounts. Likely the mounts.

You didnt by chance by the 20MOA rings did you? If you did then the smith put them on in the wrong orientation.

I'm betting the mounts were mixed up somewhere and one is the wrong height.

Rotate it 180 degrees laugh

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

That's kinda what I was thinking too. Either that or like R H said, the rings are mixed up. I would hope whoever mounted it would catch either though. I doubt the barrel is crooked

Which turrets does your Meopta have? If it's the MeoTrack TRZ or RZ turrets make sure the gunsmith didn't accidentally set the zero at the wrong elevation.

That's a thought. Does the scope have a zero stop that needs to be disengaged, adjusted and reengaged?

trying out another optic is always a good way to find out if it is the scope or mount too? That scope has plenty of vertical to get you where you need to be, I'm guess something in the mount. I do look forward to hearing your resolution. The Meopta's my friends and I have messed with have all been very nice scopes. Well built and very nice glass. I just ordered one with the new Dichrotic reticle, it should be excellent for hunting.

I took it to Quints and they shimmed the scope base. Cant tell by looking at it. Had them sight it 2" high at 100 yards also, they said it shot a 1" group with Federal Power Shock cheap ammo I gave them. I am going to shoot it myself soon. It shot 1" when I shot it before. I will take that and look forward to trying it with better ammo. Thanks for all the responses!

It's odd that it required any shim.

I've mounted quite few scopes on Vanguards using Talley rings and had no problems

I would not use shims on a scope. All you are doing is binding and torquing the tube because the receiver isn't drilled correctly,or your mounts are off. Burris makes offset inserts to fix an alignment problem without binding the tube which can screw up the erector adjustment.

If I was getting a 1 inch group with a gun when I had a 6.5-20 scope on it, I would throw it in the river.

I would bet it’s in the zero stop adjustment
