I have not used one in the field but I have looked through one in a store which isn’t very telling I got both, you won't be able to see much difference between the VX5 and the VH6 , or at least I can't. But you can tell a difference in your wallet.

I've got a 3-15x44 VX5HD and there ain't a thing wrong with it for that price range. I think I gave around $7-725 for it. That's a deal for this scope it compares well to more expensive models.
My only complaint is the tube length in front of the adjustment knobs is really short and I had some trouble getting it mounted like I wanted it. I had to go through several configurations before I got it like I like it. Of course the fact that most things I own are long action meant I had a bunch of mounts laying around to test fit. Because this ain't the first time. And also why I've been using rails a lot lately.

Man, I like the looks of that 1-5 , if the reticle is thick enough I might give one a ride on a Finnlight .308.

Here is my evaluation: Looking down a power line at over 1,000 yards at a deer in the daylight... You can't tell much difference between the Leupold and any more expensive scope... just take your pick.
The real test of a scope to me is this.... how far can I see bullet holes in the 9 or 10 ring (in the black circle). Some of that has to do with magnification, yes, but you can easily compare 2 scopes side by side if they are adjusted to the same magnification.
So I throw one of my trusty PM II's up there to compare it with and let's see....
I can say this - if you are looking down a power line trying to shoot at something as far as anyone should be taking ethical shots at animals - You don't need anything else. Strap the Leupold on there and go with it. If you just want to spend the money you saved go some work done on your rifle instead of throwing it at marginally better optics.
