5-6? Hell my best friends kid started some sort of T-ball at like 3. I hope and pray that my kids are like me and don't care to get into sports.

I coached a rec league 9-10 and it was not fun for me, but I think the kids enjoyed it. What I can't believe is how my kindergartner has classmates on travel teams. Crazy stuff.

What was also interesting is that the coaches of some other teams for 9-10 age group rec teams are more into winning games than teaching fundamental baseball. It isn't like there are playoffs or anything. Some of the teams were much more talented than ours but their coaches still wanted to break rules to try to win. Why, probably cause they are a-holes and what I found out is about 90% never played beyond grade school.

My PSA:. If you think your kid is getting a college scholarship in baseball you don't know how it works. They have 13 scholarships given to 40 kids. Do the math. Spending thousands of dollars on travel ball for your gradeschool kids isn't an investment.

Another thing, when did it become acceptable to get all decked out with expensive gear and real practice outfits? When I was growing up those were the kids that got their butts kicked both on and off the field. I literally had dads commenting on how good their kids looked in the latest $$$ gear and clothes. All I could think was, "are you trying to get him beat up?"

But I guess that world ended in the 1980's. I kind of miss it.

Though come to think of it....hunters have kind of gone the same way.

I am the president over a pretty good size park here. You see some crazy stuff for sure. Never knew that grown people around here can act in such a childish way and then try to defend the way in which they act. It really is baffling.

This. My son can pick one sport to play usually at the YMCA. All other time we would spend traveling to games or at practices is time he gets with me and I teach life lessons (how to work, fix things, be a man, ethics, faith, etc). I cant teach that from a bleacher.

Dr. Andrews and many other well-known orthopedic surgeons frown heavily on travel ball and the such.

He states that his business is approximately 50% adolescents now, as opposed to 15% a little over a decade ago...nearly all shoulder and elbow injuries from baseball.

I believe it. I had shoulder surgery at 16 and it ended my ability to pitch and QB in football. I will pay closer attention to my kids so they have more than 1st base and reciever as an option for their senior years if high school.

Plus, being in high school and having too much pain to drive with your right arm is no fun either. Or batting it for almost 30 years afterward. But I sure am glad we won those little league games back when I was 12.....

I love all these people saying parental prodding is the only reason saying these kids (admittedly some are pressured into it)are playing without knowing the individual kid. These are the same men that would be criticizing if they were inside playing video games. They’d be claiming when they were kids they planted 5000 acres with a nothing but a hoe and could hit a rock 500 feet with a stick. They are the same ones bragging about there kid fishing or killing deer. (All of which I’m fine if you choose to do so my kids have) They are the very ones claiming that these younger generations are soft. My kids killed there first deer when they asked and could do it on their own and if anyone knows my kids, they know you won’t be around them long till deer hunting or baseball comes up in their conversation. I never pressured them into doing anything. I tried talking my kids out of playing. Told them we’d fish turkey hunt or whatever they wanted to try to do this summer. They chose baseball. The way I work it’s very hard for me to be there half of the time.

GomerJr wanted to play, anyway, but I was quick to support it because he is naturally a really shy kid. We have tried to get him involved in as many things as possible to "break" him of his shyness. Church and baseball have been the 2 biggest factors in helping with it. I won't push to play baseball, or any other sport if he doesn't want to. But as long as he wants to, I'll gladly support it. (but we ain't doing that travel ball crap).

Predominantly thanks to the dirtneck daddies trying to teach their 10yr olds to throw curveballs and sliders so they can lock up that scholarship before they start middle school....

Yes Gomer.

Our 6U team won the league this year. But after every game, the kids would ask "did we win"? Lol. They just wanted a drink and snack. But the parents act like they've bet the farm and lively hood on the out come of a 6U game. Screaming and yelling like wild banshee's. Excuse me Ma'am, Sir....um he's 5 years old. Chill. But I've been known to have uncontrolled outbursts as well.

I was racing dirt bikes at 5 & 6, broke my leg, nose and three fingers, before I was 6.
Had a concussion, and numerous contusions, before I was 10.
My dad was racing, my mom was racing, two cousins and aunt and uncle were all racing back then. My mom peeled off her left kneecap dropping her Yamaha MX 125 at about 70 mph. Dad broke his back twice and his tailbone. He got injured worse, on a motorcycle, than he did in Vietnam.
We rode in the back of trucks and we played outside all day when momma didn't even know where we was or what we was up to.

I signed mine up at 4 to see if he would enjoy it. He did and asked to play at 5 so I let him, i missed signups this year and told him sorry, well I could see he was upset so I contacted the league rep and he let him play. I will never pressure any sport on my kid I'd rather be fishing with them anyway but there is absolutely nothing wrong if a kid wants to play at 5 or 6. I don't like it when some parents try to make up for them sucking at sports in school by being hard on a youngster hoping he will be the next goat

Not according to the conversation I personally had with him two weeks ago. I asked him specifically about that, because that was my thought. He stated that it has much more to do with a child's growth rates/patterns and stresses placed on them during that time. "You would think that, but you would be surprised" was his exact comment.

Interesting. Probably doesn't matter what "pitch" you're throwing. A lot of these kids 9-10 months out of the year, between Spring baseball, summer All Stars/travel ball, Fall ball. There's a breaking point...

There are many great reasons to play organized baseball/sports. I think the point is that not treating it like semi-pro ball before the age of 13 would benefit kids both physically and mentally. Baseball and football were my life until injury occurred. I hope my kids grow to love the game as much as I do and form life-long friendships and memories.

The parental prodding is an issue. I would say most kids today haven't experienced a pick up game or practice without a "parent" organizing and directing it.

But my point is there are no full scholarships on baseball teams...well maybe one but "your kid" isn't getting it. I can't tell you the number of parents I hear talking about college baseball scholarships. My tip for them would be give the $100 glove and $200 bat a rest and buy some books.
