Does anyone here hunt the Talladega NF and/or Oakmulgee WMA? Someone told me that you could hunt the National Forrest without having to be on the WMA. Is this true? I always thought that the only hunting in the forrest was on the WMA itself.

Oakmulgee WMA is only a small part of the NF. The NF and Oakmulgee WMA have altogether different hunting schedules.

You can hunt National Forest land other than WMA. I grew up down there in Perry County, right in the middle of the Forest. It's a huge area, but its broken up a lot in places with a lot of private land mixed in. You have to be careful and make sure you know where you are. You can get a pretty detailed map at the Talladega National Forest Ranger Station - Oakmulgee District office, it's right off of Hwy 5 in Brent. Just South of the 4-way stop about a half mile south of 82. Map is about 9 bucks I think, or it was a couple years ago at least.

Thanks for the replies. I tried finding info and maps online but I can't find much. I will check the ranger station next time I'm down that way.

You can get the map online; I bought one a couple of years ago. I think it was from "The National Forest Store" or something like that. Search for Talladega National Forest - Oakmulgee Division.

I hunted a couple of places there this year. Some of the land is marked really good with red paint and signs others are not. Make sure you don't get on private land. Also remember that the rules for the national forest fall under the open public permit land so doe days are not the same as the county.

I tried to hunt several tracts on the NF during turkey season a few yrs. back. It seemed like they either had or were leveling all the timber they could. The only standing timber seemed to be on the WMA. Wouldn't matter much to me during deer season, though.

Over 392,000 acres. Plenty of timber that hasn't been cut

Thanks for the replies. All good info. I have ordered a map of the forest. Can't wait to check it out.
