I'm considering an X series riding tractor. No zero turns because I want it to hold hills well and pull a spreader. Is there one that has the mowing speeds of a zero turn?

Kubota makes a limited slip zero turn, with a steering wheel. The front wheels actually do the steering, and from what I hear, it holds a hillside very well.
I can tell you from experience that is a serious problem for most zero turns.
I've almost took mine swimming in the pond a few times.

Just bought a scag and love it. During review reads they say scag holds really well to a hill. Just FYI. just gonna pay for them.

My scag cuts hills like a boss. Way better than a tractor style can. I had one my whole life before the scag.

I cut 30 degree banks all the time with my Kubota Commander. It sticks very well.

Is that the one with the steering wheel?
I've admired them, but never actually talked to anyone who owns it.

I can tell you there's an art to cutting a pond bank with a JD Z. And you don't get a second chance.

got an x500 48” deck with over 500hrs on it and it will cut at a pretty good pace with sharp blades, but not z-turn fast. got 500 for upgraded trans for pulling a core aerator. we recently moved to larger acreage with a few hills in the yard and i’ll be swapping to hdap tires in the near future, after the wet spring we’ve had. the aired down turf tires are ok, just break free quicker on damp hills.
I don’t know about the newest decks, but the 7 Iron deck came out after I bought mine and is supposed to cut better at speed than the Edge deck on mine.

experience is a freakin' awesome teacher....

I've got a 60" 7-iron mulch on demand. It really depends on what you're cutting. Dad's place is full of clover and ragweed, it won't cut fast at all.

I thought it was hilarious when JD began touting their exclusive 7-Iron decks several years ago. They weren’t new. The industry, en masse, had switched from the stamped 7ga decks to the fab decks so JD bought out the deck manufacturer for their own line. Those decks were always the weak spot on the tractors and ZTRs that used them. Couldn’t get more than 1200-1400 hours on one without holes blown out the sides and top. The replacement fan decks I’ve gotten well over 4000 hours on and just recently patched a small corner.

Given the ZTRs listed here that hold hills well are all good brands/models then I’m guessing they have better than the basic transaxles. That probably has a bunch to do with it, a box store ZTR probably does just fine with a smaller flat yard but an upgrade is needed to handle a big hilly place. Thats why I bought a commercial one and it holds very well. When cutting the hills I will always have the ROPS up and belted in. I ain’t too proud

In my case, the transaxle isn't the problem. It's the wide turf tires. Got plenty of power, but you let that low side spin and you'll zip down the hill like a greasy pig.
