It's in Indiana on Tom James Farm. Tom is a wealth of knowledge. He has actually just taken a new job that will allow him more time to film for us again. Even though this is filmed in Indiana the same principals can be applied in our area. I am really looking forward to seeing what he turns this property into. Just watched it I’d love to do something similar to that on my land. Of course my land is mainly pine plantation so adding 10 acres of oaks would be significant. Why did he plant oaks when it looks like that field was surrounded by acres and acres of mature hardwoods. With just 10 acres why not plant fruit trees, or other nuts like chestnuts, or saw tooths, or even berries like muscadines. Still provides similar cover to other trees and gives you a variety from the naturally occurring oaks the field is surrounded by? I thought the exact same thing.... He also mentioned future timber harvest. 10 acres?? Maybe I misunderstood.

If you paid attention, the Oak varieties chosen all hold their leaves late, through winter. It will provide thermal cover and future mast. Good Combo in that Country! Gotcha. I figured there was a reason, but I didn’t understand it.

They might know better, but IMHO the trees are planted too close together. For maximum growth and future mast production, I would agree. But, I believe that the primary goal was cover and diversity.

Another thing I would add (if it were me) was a couple of long rows of blueberries right next to the clover strips. I have blueberries that I’ve transplanted for 30 years and I have personally seen deer and turkey picking them off when they’re ripe. They don’t get tall and won’t shade out the clover. Loved the video BTW!
