Episode 60: “flounder, pompano, and redfish hatcheries”

Fascinating. About 42 minutes long. Guy from Alabama is being interviewed. They have a hatchery down near Gulf Shores, they pump salt water 6 miles in to it. They catch the fish, and force two spawns (as opposed to one fall spawn) with artificial light and water temp

They’re putting tens of thousands of artificially created fish out 8 week process from spawn to making a 2” redfish ready to release

Thanks I'll start listening to it.

Marine fisheries pump their salt water from Gulf State Park Pier to the hatchery that is North of the canal. Some mighty big pumps too.

Said one 3lb flounder can produce 200,000 eggs. Crazy

They also tell a story of a Mississippi hatchery having a surplus of eggs, (were going to throw away) so they went over and got them in zip lock bags,.. produced a bunch of trout and said they plan to return favor with some redfish at some point

Saltwater Finnaddicts had a tournament last year with a category of live flounder. They were all used for the breeding process.
