I got a bag of seed corn that is round up resistant from a friend of mine. I want to plant about an acre of it behind my house as a little food plot.
Questions are:
1.) do I really need to round up the grass/weeds or will it be fine to just till up the ground and plant the corn? If I do need to kill the grass, how long do I need to wait before I start to till?
2.) when is the best time to do plant it? Season starts in late September.
3.) has anyone used a 1 strand electric fence to keep deer out until season opens? Does it work?
4.) is it better to leave the corn standing or cut it when season opens?

That’s all I can think of right now. But any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. I’ve hunted ag land my whole life so I’ve never done any kind of food plots, but thought it be fun to do just here at the house. Looking forward to hearing y’alls advice.

Deer dont usually mess with mine too much before season, 1/2 of it was still there the last couple weeks of season. If youre not gona round up the corn youll have to plow it, if you do neither you wont have any corn. Fertilizer is king when youre growing corn, you better get that right. They will eat it much faster on the ground.

Why not try and plant some grain sorghum instead? Easier to grow, more tolerant of weeds, and it will benefit wildlife still. Once you get that under your belt then you can move on to a big boy crop like corn.

If youre talking about milo, id pass on that and do the corn. I grew milo four years and the biggest result I saw was a flock of blackbirds that moved in and scared everything every time they took off. Very seldom saw a deer or turkey touch it.

Because it's not roundup ready, for one.

No RR needed. Plant with 10-10-10 or 8-8-8. Be ready to sidedress with ammonia or throw down middle right before a good rain. Get to know some ol'timers that garden with a tractor they are your best friend and can best tell you what may take you a lifetime to learn.

Use it if you want I am just letting him know we had great corn before roundup ready corn. Those ol'timers with a green thumb could grow corn before all this roundup and technology. I have planted, picked, and ate plenty myself. An ol'timer that farmed for a living can show you when to plow, plant, add ammonia, fertilize, plant with the signs, and how to set up the implements. No round up needed and will help you more than any RR corn. Like I said use it is up to you! It may help you.........

It's definitely cool and worthwhile to know the old way of cultivating without chemicals. For those of us that can't be at our farm multiple times a week, RR corn is a heaven-sent. Spray 2-3 times, and produce a good crop, with reasonable rain. I do it without even disturbing the soil.

Thanks for the input so far guys. I’m actually close friends with quite a few crop farmers around here and north AL. I just wanted some tips or tricks that you guys know that are more for deer plots. I sprayed it yesterday, gonna again a little later then till. I got a perfect hickory tree there that’s begging for a lock on!

If I were doing corn and tilling the ground the way you want to, I'd till or disk , plant , then spray. I'd spray it once when it was tall as possible but could still get my tractor over it.

Planting corn this late you’re gonna battle pests during the entire growing season so be ready to spray with a good pesticide.

It’s not too late for corn. I’m sure his corn is BT as well as RR.

1. Spray and kill all weeds and grass. Lots of different options will work for chemicals.
2. Apply starter fertilizer. If no soil test has been done apply 60 units N, 60 units P, 60 units K, and 8-10 units S.
3. No till the corn seed with a planter about 2” deep. (If you don’t have a no till planter then prepare a seed bed and plant the seed about 2” deep.
4. When the corn is around knee high apply around 100 units N and 18-20 units of S.
5. When the corn is around knee high spray to kill all weeds and grass. Lots of different options will work for chemicals.

I would leave the corn standing in the fall. You could cut a lane or two and plant some wheat or rye.

I do farm for a living. Trying to give op good info on how to grow corn.

I don’t even remotely farm for a living. If you’ve got a good no till planter it’s a quick process. Skipping tillage saves over half your time.

And saves your soil structure

To the guys that are no tilling, how are you applying the fertilizer once the corn is up.

Broadcast urea plus sulfate over the top

I’ve got a Pull type sprayer with a John blue pump. I have hoses that almost touch the ground and the nitrogen dribbles out between the rows.
