Hearing them isn’t an issue (when they gobble), but direction seems to be. I talked with an older guy I met on public land a couple of weeks ago. He uses an ear muff type headset that helps him hear distant birds. Of course I tried it on, and it does make the hearing part easier, but my issue is direction. I hunt solo (no one in my family turkey hunts) and I’ve been trying really hard to get my first turkey. I took my girlfriend this morning and we heard at least two different birds at sunrise. They both gobbled several times. I’d been to this area several times before and I’ve put boots on the ground and I know the lay of the land. One sounds off what I hear is directly in front of us and close. A seconds sounds off what sounds like to my left and much farther away. Now they gobbled several times and I’d point at the direction each gobble came from, my girlfriend would point in a different direction. I get they turn their heads and true it does play with my ears on the distant part, but the direction of the gobble is what I’m questioning. Any recommendations! I’m all EARS!

Did you go towards where you thought they were and did you gear them better when you got close? Where they where you thought they were.

Yes, the one in front of us I’d heard in that area a few times before. Yes, I’ve taken off after him a few times to close the distance and I can hear the difference as I get closer. Judging distance doesn’t seem to be an issue and I don’t think direction is either. Just thought it was funny that two people can hear the same gobbel and have a totally different sense of direction on where it came from. Just wonder if the hearing muffs Help?

It could have just been the lay of the land. Especially if you were even with them or they were above you. The hills I hunt can fool you that way. The best thing you could do is go to an ENT and have a hearing test done.

My hearing is bad. I would go with people who would hear birds, and I couldn't hear them. I bought Pro Ears Gold. I can now hear birds, but have two problems. One is direction - it's terrible, especially in hills. Often, I get it completely backwards and take off going away from the turkey. Two, It's hard to tell how close you are. Sometimes a bird 300 yards away sounds like he's in your lap. You can learn to deal with the distance thing by learning what sounds are close vs. far or just take your headset off when he's close enough to hear regularly. But, I've yet to figure out the direction thing unless I am close enough to hear without the headset. your mileage may vary.

Some of them have directional technology but are a lot more $.
