He asked for a gazillion dollars. Nike doesn't play to extortion, and they're not worried about taking a small PR hit by paying college athletes or runners. They're in bed with the colleges, coaches and NCAA, and none of that is going away. Nike will fire an underling or three, pay some fines or whatever and motor along without much of a blip.

Adidas is the same way. And the third leg in the stool — Under Armour (which supplies Auburn) — hasn't been outed yet, but you know they're doing the same. They all do.

Threatening criminal prosecution in an attempt to settle a civil matter is not just extortion, it is a huge ethical violation for attorneys.

I don’t think it goes on to the same extent in football. It is easier in basketball. There are less players and the stars only stay one year. In football, there are so many players, it makes this type behavior harder to make it worth the cost. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, or course it does. But, it to the same extent as basketball.

Football doesn't have anything remotely close to the AAU basketball circuit. That's where the really dirty stuff goes on.

Football recruiting is down and dirty. Basketball takes it ten levels further than that.

Folks don't care what kind of cleats football players are wearing, but there is an entire culture around owning and wearing the same shoes basketball players wear.
