A buddy on mine brought me his rifle to remount a scope for him. I wanted to use talley lightweights on it. I believe it is a Mauser 98. I’ll include a few pics to help ID it and the rings I was going to use. I will be mounting a Trijicon 2.5-10x56 30mm tube. I believe the the medium rings should do the trick and keep it low. I could go the easy and cheaper route and just get new Leupold rings and throw on the base, but I wanted to do it how I would if it were mine. Thanks

Safety and action look like a Parker Hale. Commercial Mauser. Really need to see more of the gun.

You're spot on, that's a Spanish 98 but it's almost sacrilegious to mount a Hubble monster scope on her....like putting a lift kit and spinning rims on a vintage sports car Agreed. And Talley lightweights also. I like those mounts for a Remington 700 but those are teets on a boar for that rifle. Buy Talley bases and vertical split rings to add a touch of class to that rifle and a n ice scope with an objective no bigger than 40mm.

This fella won this scope. He wants it on this rifle. It’s his scope and rifle.
I wanted to put the most solid, simple set up on it I could for him.
So y’all think I should just go get medium rings to mount to the base.

So y’all think I should just go get medium rings to mount to the base. I would go with the Talleys you 1st listed instead of reusing that Leupold 1pc base with new rings. Also the setup 338 mentioned with the vertical split rings look really good on older rifles. And you're right, it is his gun and he should have it set up exactly how he wants.

I would use the Talley vertical split rings way before the lightweights on that rifle and scope. They are mush stronger than the lightweights and you aren't concerned about that rifle adding ounces anyway. Lightweights work but I've seen several broken pieces where they could torque at the hollow scalloped base. A bigger scope could cause more torque issues there than a smaller one.
Read and follow the directions on vertical split ring tightening or you can crease a tube quicker than with horizontal rings.

I can't tell from the pictures. Does the current base mount with 1 or 2 screws?
Will the Talley's fit the front screw hole spacing?
There are two types of gun enthusiasts ... Those who have been F#CKED by PTG and those who will be!

I have used Talley bases and vertical rings on an Interarms Mark X, which should have the same screw spacing as the gun pictured. I ha e two of those guns now, one base Conetrol mounts and the other has Leupold QD mounts. Will swap the Leupold for Talley QD mounts when I get around to it some day.
