A Catholic priest was stabbed while celebrating Mass in Montreal Friday morning as stunned parishioners looked on, according to officials and video footage.

The horrifying incident, which authorities said was not terror-related, unfolded just before 9 a.m. at the historic St. Joseph's Oratory, leaving Father Claude Grou, 77, with lacerations to his upper body, according to Montreal police spokeswoman Caroline Chevrefils. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was listed in stable condition, according to the Montreal Diocese.

"There was a man, a young man, who stood up and, quickly, went to the front, into the sanctuary, behind the altar where Abbé Claude Grou was standing," witness Philip Barrett told The Montreal Gazette. "No one was sure what exactly was happening and I saw the priest move a bit, farther away from this person."

The alleged assailant, a 26-year-old, can be seen on video footage running up onto the altar, knocking over a candle and then attacking the priest with a sharp object.

He was then detained by church security until police arrived, Chevrefils said.

I believe these days most have off duty LEOs, plus security teams in place plus they're has always been more members with permits than thought. It's a sad times when it has come to this.

If someone wanted to charge our Pastor in the middle of a sermon, there wouldn't

Yes we have a security team and probably every other man has a pistol.

We have quite a number of current or retired LE personnel. We have all been through the ALERT Active Shooter training. We got the blessings of the Deacons and Pastors. Since then, they haven't asked and it hasn't come up as a topic. One morning, out of curiosity, I did look around the congregation at where people normally sit. It looked like it was pretty well covered without trying.

With all the pedophiles in the Catholic church there may be much more to this story.

Came from a church that had a team and I'm pretty sure had at least some training or some qualification. Now it's just the "oh yeah, Jim-Bob carries, he's on security team!". I always wonder what would happen in a situation in the sanctuary where a bad guy came in and all of the "I carry so I'm on security team" respond how they see fit. I think there should be security, and that there should be training or some understanding on what people are going to do. I know plenty of people that carry that would end up shooting up half the church themselves.

*I also forgot, we have LEO's on campus every Sunday and Wednesday, so I guess that would be our security.

My church has a police officer in the lobby and no one watching the three other unlocked doors. I told my wife last time that we won’t be sitting next to one of the doors again. We have an infant and we used to leave him buckled in the car seat while he slept though the service. I realized that the car seat wouldn’t fit between the pews in the event we had to duck for cover. It’s sad but you’ve got to think about those things these days.

We have a team. We have mandatory yearly training via some guys out of Redstone. It is all day with paintball guns that dont explode (kinda cool).
