So...... I need to do something with the back yard. I had a bunch of trees cleared and about 30 loads of fill dirt added (mainly rocks with a touch of top soil). I’ve had it as a greenfield the last two years with some zoysia, fescue, and weeds mixed in. Soon, I’m gonna flatten the greenfield and seed something over it. It gets a good bit of sunlight, but the soil isn’t the best and I’m on a ridge top. I was thinking about a Bermuda variety? Suggestions? I have a couple of dogs that’ll wear it pretty good too.

If you're going seeded, I'd just get common bermuda. You can't wear it out. Hulled bermuda.

You definitely need Z52 zoysia.....(because that is all we grow!) smile

Probably need the Bermuda if you have pet traffic. You can always buy some squares of other grass types and and cut them up and sprig them and see if the shade and soil quality will support the species. No matter what you put out you have water the young grass regularly to get it to take. Note that you can mix some centipede seed in with the bermuda seed and the dominant grass will eventually root out everything else. That is why weeds usually win the battle. The point of the mixing is you can see what works and what you like without putting out something that does not work for your situation. Obviously will take longer to get to the final product but it may prevent you from spending a fortune that did not work for a back yard.

How well does zoysia like lots of shade

Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

I think zoysia is you best bet with shade vs Bermuda.

Like Fur said, no grass will do well in shade or partial shade. Note that sunlight dictates shade. Not being funny here - you need direct sun rays for an appreciable time every day to sustain grass. If you have moss growing it is too shady. Zoysia can tolerate some shade but will thin out like over time if it is too shady.

Build a patio or gazebo in the shady areas.

I've got some Zoysia squares out there now. Gonna try and do the Bermuda seed and see if it will take.

If you were going to fill in about a 100 square circle with Zoysia, is it better to go with sod or plugs?

Got a circular flower right in the middle of the yard that I’m wanting to fill in and need some ideas

Sod is faster and plugs are cheaper. I would go with lots of plugs and a time release N fertilizer.
