Controlled burn. I live 50miles away and the smoke was thick at my house. Must have been one heck of a fire.

I went through there yesterday after lunch on my way to Athens to pick up a piece of equipment at C & B Farm & Outdoors. There were guys walking down the sides of the road with diesel torches lighting the fires. Lots and lots of smoke. Visibility was really limited through there. That was the slowest part of my entire round trip.

I was in Springville from 4-8pm this afternoon and it was heavy. Back around Gardendale area about 9pm and was running in to some heavy smoke as well.

We came through there yesterday and hit a spot of zero visibility. Literally zero. Like couldn't see the road, stripe, side of the road, anything. Had to stop until the wind blew it off the road.

Wonder how often it is controlled burned?

Every 2 or 3 years? Every 5 years?

I'm sure Matt would probably know.

Talk about some new growth for the wildlife, it'll be there.

Yup. That fire on Bankhead aint nothing. When they light up last years tornado damage on Shoal Creek just west of Jacksonville it will be one of the most awesome fires the country has ever seen.

They've been burning off the Conecuh NF. It is on a 5 year rotation so I would assume Bank head is too. There are maps on their website that will show you the areas they plan to burn.

They aren’t burning the whole forest. Some of it is 3 year rotations, some of it 9 years and the longleaf portions may be more frequent. The wet winter has kept them from burning during January/February, so there will be lots of burning for the next few weeks.

So they do t take into account the wind and roads? I know we have some property by the interstate and it’s tough finding the right day to burn.

They absolutely take wind, transport winds and humidity into play. Each burn area has a certain set of parameters that must be met or they can’t burn that area that day. Sometimes the smoke just doesn’t carry or disperse like it should.

Hopefully soon. I got a lot of work to do in there but you can't even risk walking in there right now.

Need to burn some of the state park properties, too. Guntersville would be a good one to start with.

Forest maintenance of publicly owned land has really tapered off in the last 10 years or so. The Federal, US Forest Service lands tend to stay on schedule and for the most part look good. But the state owned lands have not been put through regular fire prescription or other maintenance like they should be. Some of the ALDOT and DCNR property right now look like hazard fire and bug bombs ready to explode.

That there is the truth. There are some areas on NF properties they seem to miss also. I have an acre or so I burn off every year. You wouldn't believe the birds that are attracted to it each fall because not the different species of plants that grow. I like to do "back burns" where say if the wind is out of the north, I'll start it from the south side. Burns hotter it seems like.

Control burns help for sure, but they really need some huge plots of Honeysuckle plantations or natural plants for the deer.

Hell I live about 2 miles a crow flight away. Sitting outside burning a brush pile 10 sheets to the wind and a fire truck went by. Then they came back pulled in my driveway and asked if everything was alright.I said yes just burning a small brush pile it was about out.The fireman said someone called a barn on fire.I was like no sir. Then my wife barrels out of the house and says what the hell you done now!!! Fireman said they were at the wrong house!!!

When I left work Friday, you could see the smoke north on 79 from Pinson. I called good friend who is state guy in Etowah Co and he told me is was Bankhead. I told him smoke was gonna be an issue if it settles. Ceiling height was too low dues to clouds and it could not mix. Looked rough on 59 all way to Steele from Clay-Chalkville.
